BOSTON -- Power outages struck major U.S. and Canadian cities on Thursday, witnesses said, although it was not immediately clear if there was a link between the breakdowns.

Power outages were reported in the New York metropolitan area and Detroit, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa, witnesses said.

Just heard it on local radio. Pretty scary.... wonder if its a over usage due to heat wave, or if its some type of attack. ( maybe something to do with microsfot exploit?)

Just speculation...

Dan Rather is saying it was not Terrorist attack. NY power plant went off line, and then it switched to other power plants they were blown too!!!!

Saw video of NYC looks like a big street parade!!!

I heard it on the way home from the grocery and it really freaked me out. I kept waiting for them to say Atlanta had been hit.

But as was noted, they are saying that so far, not terrorist related.

Scary stuff even if it's not - the heat, the looting, transportation, hospitals, cars are being left on the road, etc. :(

What I have picked up so far was that there was a transformer on fire at a manhattan con-ed plant... and someone had heard an explosion... So sounds like a transformer went out on them....

Well when the plant had problems, they off course switched over their section of the powergrid and at that point it caused an "Instability" in the powergrid...

Then all the lights went out....

I wasn't there for the 78 outage but I remember the "famous" blackout of 65.... That was fun...lol

AP:

lightning caused the outage in the Niagra powerplant

lolol..... ya never know...tis an awful small world out there....

anyway.... Thisis what Fox is saying:

http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,94772,00.html

WASHINGTON — The power has gone out in several major cities in the northern United States and Canada, stalling daily operations and disabling afternoon rush hour commuters.

New York City, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto and Ottawa are among the major cities affected.

Toledo, Akron and Canton, Ohio; Batavia and Plattsburgh, N.Y.; Erie, Pa.; towns in western Connecticut and in Canada also lost all electricity shortly after 4 p.m. EDT.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission spokesman Bryan Lee said that a shutdown somewhere along the line had caused a chain reaction up through Canada and back down to the Midwest cities in Ohio and Michigan. A New York state energy official said an overload at the Niagara-Mohawk energy plant caused a cascading effect.

Workers with New York's energy service Consolidated Edison reported black smoke rising from a transformer in the 14th Street facility in the Lower East side of Manhattan along the FDR Drive.

However, Bloomberg reported that Con Ed officials assured him that the boilers at the 14th street facility created the smoke. He said when the boilers are shut down, as they automatically are when no juice is being fed to them, they create black smoke.

NAERC Press Secretary Ellen Dancoe said the affected power grid revolves around Lake Erie and affects areas as far northwest as Saskatchewan, as far southwest as Oklahoma and as far south as Florida.

Power is coming back on already starting in the western states and moving east

seems a lightning strike at the mohawk/niagra plant sent an overload of sorts and shut down several distribution centers

will be an interesting 12 hours in NYC

sunset is in 10 minutes there

millions STILL walking trying to get home

What will be bizarre and fucking hilarious (at least to me) is if this is the news that precipitates any equities meltdown.

Of course, it will be after the market has broke hard before they profess that's what "caused" it. :yowsa:

Call me inept and simply not paying attention in physics class, but um, how do they explain the big geographic gaps in this grid that didn't have any issues?

Depending on what you trade, you may not be able to sell tomorrow.

All I am saying is if we close below the levels i cited earlier, it is a strong sell signal and confirmation to a cycle period when I was anticipating a high.

I am short the S&P futures. I'm looking for a 1-2 month break and potential mini-collapse. In futures, it is worthy of my participation. Someone with a longer time horizon might consider differently.

Although I have nothing riding on it and reserve the right to change my mind, I do not believe the recent high will be the last (assuming i am even right on the drop).

I still think there is a good chance we break hard and recover to one more higher high in this sequence with the high coming no later than early 2004.

If pressed to persuade someone to INVEST for a long term position, it would be in mining stocks and metals.

No problems here and this is the first I heard of it. And yes, I'm in the northeast. Of course I was playing golf poorly all night but the computers were still on when I came home so I doubt the power went out here.

verry strange

i saw the blackout map and the entire state to pa. was not effected

you most get your power from somewhere other than the niagra plants

Which would mean that it would be NORMAL that he wasn't affected....right?

From what I heard, it was just a small part of PA that was out.

Not strange at all. We have excess capacity for providing power here. We used to have a hundred steel mills here and now we have none. All that power that was used to run them is sold elsewhere now. If there is a major problem in the grid they shut off the outsiders and we keep our power on.

boston is on a different grid and didnt loose most power according to the news

think its time for a power grid update?

They have been calling for one in congress for years

been predicting this blackout saying it was only a matter of time
