View Full Version : California Governor's race

its the fifth or sixth largest economy in the world and its completely in shambles... they are pushing for a recall vote to oust the existing governor and they have people running for governor like Gary Coleman, Larry Flynt, Terminator, porn stars and more than 200 other people running for governor to turn it around?

can anyone see the cause and effect relationship at work here?

when you start to feel that the best hope for your children is "that indestructable cyborg robot guy from the future" - there is a problem.

Gary Coleman is on the radio in an interview right now and he does not even know who the Vice President of the USA is.

its just embarrassing.

For those who profess a hatred of politicians and politics, look what happens next! ;-)

The Cali situation shows what happens when liberal run free without being checked. They are working hard to do this to the entire country.

To many it's just a lark, They have $3,500 and 65 friends.

To others it is their 10 minutes of fame. It is a cheap price to have their voice or cause heard.

It would seem that if they had to put up $10,000 and have 1,000 signatures (minimun) it would probably cut the list considerably. Not enough at stake to really take it seriously and it hurts the good candidates.

Yes, it is not only embarrassing to California - but, the whole country and our system. Flawed it might be - but, this is just too silly.

Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth that this thread would contain if the current Governor of California was a born-again REPUBLIFACIST facing Robert Redford in a recall that had been financed by Barbara Streisand?

Toss out a cracker and hear Polly's pithy responses ...

I have talked with several politicians in my life... IMHO, todays politicians are not the brightest people in the world - they are starting to look like the nobilities in the 16-18th century Europe.

At one time in our history we needed politicians, but today we could probably function even better without 90-95% of them.

considering how the presidential elections went, i think this is a very loud signal to the world that "the worlds greatest democracy" is pretty pathetic.

Colin, those were his words exactly on what he would do to fight terrorism. bizarre. its not even funny. the state of CA is really hurting and these assholes use that for publicity. they dont even have enough sense to endorse someone who has a chance at helping... they just grandstand for a.m. talk radio. its pathetic.

Cruz Bustamante(sp) Lt Governor is running. i think its going to be hard for him to get past the fact that he was giving a speech and somehow blurted out the word "nigger" while addressing a African American crowd in a speech about Black History Month. good luck with that!

I don't really see what the problem is. Either we have elections or we don't have elections. If we have elections, people who are the best at obtaining votes will win the elections. Politicians who act in their own best interest will have to act in the perceived interest of a good portion of the public or else they won't get re-elected.

The alternative is less representational government.

yes. he said so many stupid things i lost track. he came off like a high functioning autistic child that one should feel sympathy for... like the election was some special olympics like event to boost his own sense of self esteem by running for governor.

i had struggle to remind myself that he was a normally functioning adult in his mid 30's.

jesus. it used to be that if you wanted to get publicity in LA you got arrested, or rented a billboard with your picture on it. now these fucking clowns run for supreme ruler of the state.

I'm heading off to a convention soon for one of the largest unions in the state of California that my husband is an active member in. Last year we had Arnold signing autographs for the participant's kids... pushing his politics and spreading the rumors that he might be running for Governor in the future. This was LAST SUMMER.... the whole "I'm not sure if I'll run" thing just doesn't hold water with me.

Anyway... it will be very interesting to see who this year's keynote speakers are (Gray Davis - current CA Governor) and a few State Senators & political celebs were present... Should be very interesting to say the least...

I would agree with Rolo on the too many politicians argument. In Pennsylvania we have a house and a senate. There are 200 districts in the house and 50 in the Senate. Each one of these people gets what they call WAM's. (Walking Around Money) $100k a year for everyone of the 250 members that they can do whatever they want with. No accountablity, no ability to audit what they spend it on, just a free 100k coming out of our pockets for each one of them every year. Add to that they increase their pay every year and have taxed businesses to death it's a wonder anyone still lives here anymore. Pittsburgh has gone from a population of around 1.2 million to a little over 300,000 in 20 years. Notice we have lost 900,000 people but we have the same number of politicians. We were the 16th largest city in the country, Tulsa, OK is bigger now. Politicians suck. That's the bottom line especially when you live in a town that has had democrats in charge for 60 years. Not saying Republicans would be any different if they had a monopoly on power either. Our politicians have never met a tax they didn't like. The latest one is that the governor wants to tax sick people. You believe that? It's true. He wanted a $5 tax on doctors visits. Unbelievable.

Rant over, I really wish I could leave this state but I can't because of family commitments. One day, I'll be living in North Carolina on the beach.

WAM??? WTF???

I'm with ya Ulfie... wish I could move but we moved out to the desert to be near my grandma after my grandpa passed away - and now my parents are out here too to be close to my kids.

If I had my way I'd be living in any other state. They all have their own bullshit, but CA seems to be riddled with it more than most lately.
