HOLY FUCK! Who knew spam could be detrimental to a long life!

Another interesting article. http://www.msnbc.com/news/941040.asp?0cb=-112171549

This is the kicker:

Only a few months earlier than the FTC forum, the Pew Internet and American Life Project released its own e-mail and spam study, and it included this startling pronouncement: Spam isn’t that big a problem. A noisy, wired minority, the report said, has overexaggerated the spam jam-up. In fact, only 15 percent of workers surveyed say they have to deal with more than 50 e-mails a day. And nearly three-quarters said “only a little” of their work e-mail is spam.

This is a pearl!! The anti-spam zealots, the spam-nazis are the big danger. These guys are the people who think they own the internet. Back in the day a few people who managed the big networks, and universities could control the internet - As the internet became more commercial these people started looking for ways to try and keep control!

Of course the Anti's don't want you to know that.

I belong to quite a few List Serv anti spam Lists. It's generally the same 30 people who do nothing but complain and search out for spam.

It's sad really.

But that article said it the best, if no one was clicking, there wouldn't be any emails sent out.

You can make stats paint any picture you like.

Spam IS a real problem. Hell, I get on average about 2400 spams a day now. SpamAssassin takes care of most of them. A significant number still slip thru. What's worse is I occasionally miss a legitimate email that gets filtered and thrown out with the trash because I cant really manually scan 2000+ messages.

I'm unusual in that I have keep email addresses forever, my oldest is over 10 years old. Some are posted publicly too, so I get absolutely slammed.

Spam is unavoidable if you want customers, clients and/or friends to be able to easily find your email address. Spam is also an infrastructure challenge for major providers and ISPs. A provider such as Earthlink or Comcast has to maintain twice the SMTP and POP3 capacity that they would need for legitimate mail just to handle all of the unwanted spam.

I hate to add government involvement to anything though. Government is already too big. Spam ultimately needs to be addressed with technology. A good step toward solving the problem would be simply requiring email authentication and making the system spoof proof so the sender could always be identified and accountable.

I recently opted out of over half of my junk mail and guess what? I get half the mail so to get 2400 emails a day there must be a reason
1 What have you signed up for
2 what do you do that your email is so exposed
3 do you belong to newsgroups
4 do you do all of your shopping on the net?
5 or did you signup for lots of "free things" on the net and now its so out of control that your pissed

I know a lot of people who use there computer daily as we do all and 2400 e mails sounds like a bad joke not a reality.

Marketing is how our captalistic society turns I personally hate tv commercials is there an anti tv commercial group?
What about those ads on the sides of buses I am offended that i cant look at a bus on the road and not have to see an advertisement WTF?
Delete it and move on

That being said and email should state what its about and who its from
no spoofing or fake headers.
As far as unsolicited email when car dealers and cc corps stop pre-approving me my mailbox will get less wear and tear

Still 2400 a that you didnt ask for?

Oh, of course there's a reason. I'm not pretending not to understand where they come from and why.

I gave you the two key reasons. First off, I have email addresses mapped to my inbox that have been around over 10 years. And second, I do not actively hide my email address. And although I do not opt-in to lists or go for obvious gimmicks like contests, etc, I do buy stuff on the web. And we all know that whether they say they do or not, there are plenty of businesses, processors, etc who sell every address they obtain.

If you do not want spam, you have to protect your "real" address and not give it to anyone. However, it's tough to do business on the Internet if you make it tough for people to contact you.

Aint that the truth. The anti's blow things way out of proportion.

I believe many abuse desk workers will tell you the antis are a bigger problem than the spammers.

Shotgun spammers will loose long term, simply because there is more money in the anti-spam business, then in spam itself...

I agree that in the long term spam will probably become too expensive or too difficult to send to make it worth the effort.

Your reasoning does not make any sense at all though.

Rolo

Ok - I will give you a reason :)

MS will include anti-spam, anti-virus etc. into their OS, and ISPs/companies will filter/monitor all mail traffic for spam and virus... They will do this, because it will have a positive impact on customer loyalty, and increase sales vs. products/services which do not have these features.

Ofcourse spammers will still be able to send spam, but the "good" mail address will be hard to mass mail.

From Microsoft:

PressPass: Do you envision the spam problem changing in any way over the next year or two?

Arbogast: Our hope is that within 18 to 24 months we'll all have to worry much less about spam. As the financial returns for spammers - which are considerable today - decrease, spamming will lose its appeal. Technology has already made it much more expensive for spammers to ply their trade, and over the next few years, I'm confident we can make spamming so unattractive a business that our customers will find themselves almost spam-free.

Microsoft doing anti-spam software is laughable. All you will have to do is go read their RFC's to see how to beat it. Microsoft security is an oxymoron.

I guess my reading on old guy talk is off or something. I really don't understand what you are getting at.
Translation: Someone who spams might owe Gonzo some $$$$. Gonzo's not saying he's never spammed, he's saying he doesn't owe people money. Ergo, he's not being a hypocrite by saying "Apparently that must be true.....ask Mr. Cash." when someone said "It makes no money." about spamming.

This ends today's "GA to CA" interpretations. You'll both be getting my bill.
B)

And Gonzo, send me your phone and I'll either call or ICQ you today. :)
