Child Hurt as Man Lobs Computer from Apartment
Mon Jul 7, 9:26 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean man angry with his daughter's Web surfing faced possible charges on Monday after he threw a computer monitor out of his 12th-floor apartment, hitting a four-year-old girl below on the head, police said.

A police official said the man, 49-year-old Park Yong-ju, had got angry when he returned to his flat in Seoul on Saturday. His 20-year-old daughter was playing an online computer game and failed to greet him, as Korean custom requires.

I read in Forbes, on the flight back to NO that S. Korea has like 80% market penetration for broadband, and they pay like $34 a month for speeds equal to 2 T1s.

The US is lagging.... too much regulation by the Feds....

Then the question to ask, Mike, is do they spend money on porn?

Mike, is do they spend money on porn?

Nothing mentioned in the article, but it has been a boom to online game companies and such.

One would think if there was a way to take payments, that it would be a nice market to tap into.

ummm... i hate to point out the obvious (im good at that), but like ummm.. uhhh when a computer monitor falls on your head from a 12th story window, one would guess you'd be not only dead on impact, but would look like a squished pepsi can....

hell, if a monitor fell on your head, deadweight from 10 feet above your head you'd be hospitalized or dead..

I've seen reports that the combined online purchasing power of Korean's and Japanese is bigger than everyone else put together. (I bet they buy a shitload of things like "hello kitty" lunchboxes to make up the volume of those dollars.)

I think I saw KK explain once that they have an incompatible credit card system. Or maybe it was blocked by Visa not wanting their CC system competing in north america or something like that.

South Korea and Japan have a combined population of 175 million, almost all have credit cards and almost none are poor.

These are very isolated markets though, they only use domestic products and especially in Japan almost nobody speaks a word of English.

Unless you are able to read Japanese and/or Korean you are not going to be able to market something in these countries, not without getting a competent local representative anyway, which is difficult in our business. Especially since our business is extremely illegal in Korea and moderately against the law in Japan.

Illegal? So are beasty sites but that ain't stopping them. I'm not worried about what's illegal over there.

Yeah I feel the same way. The issue would be finding someone in Japan or Korea who would take the risk. Probably better finding someone in the US who is from Japan or Korea and could help out out from the states...

Could be some new markets....

Timon.. I have been spammed by people offering to do translated doorway pages for placement in japan/korean search engines... the speil goes that there is a huge ex-patriot market in the USA and other western countries that do speak and read english but prefer to search for stuff in their native language.. these people create doorways explaining the surfers will be entering an english website basically... it was a damn expensive service too. Do you think that sounds like it would work well?

I said it's hard to find local representation because of the law, I don't see how your reply is relevant to my post.

Right now porn on i-mode is big in Japan... they have magazines there that are just a big collection of i-mode ads (see below). Couldn't be done in Korea though because it's too illegal there. In Korea they mostly use guerilla marketing tactics to promote WWW sites, like pasting stickers in subway trains and mens rooms etc. which is more effective than you might think, a few months ago a Korean adult site operator got arrested and the newspapers said he had 30,000 domestic members.

Now if anyone knows how to work Korean search engines, that could be lucrative!

interesting,
i've been wondering for a year or 2 now why Japanese have interest in #s only domains, now i know.

re: Korea.
does Overture KR sell any porn or adult or dating related listings ?
that would be one of the easiest ways to get into that market.

Never tried, it would probably work well, but my experience with Overture is that they are pretty strict when it comes to obeying local laws.
