Wig is 12 years old to old for a mare to have a baby?

I came home last night and a young 1/4 horse had jumped the fence and got in with my Tiny Dancer. I didn't think she was in heat but I can't think of any other reason he was so hell bent on getting inside.

Tiny Dancer, my mare is healthy. A little chubby now but otherwise in good health.

Please please give me your horse advice.

Dianna,

Your mare should be fine. At about 17 days you can ultrasound and look for embryo to confirm.

Hope this helps!

Thank you it does. So how old is too old for a horse to have a colt?

Some mares will continue to breed late in life and will be fine. This is more likely in mares that have bred regularly.

If I had to guess, I would say 18-20 is getting too old that one hould not do it on purpose. ;-)
