View Full Version : Why does most criminal activity on web come from

Is it genetic? Is it the breakdown of organized religion? Are these peoples particularly lawless and immoral? Are there structural and political reasons? Socio-economic?

It's all about the technology...all of the scams and ripoffs we see on the web are just extensions of scams in the "ral world". People don't change, just the technology does...the sa,me people who will pull of "real life" scams are generally the same who'll pull web scams...

I guess it's because The Netherlands is a 3rd world porn country... it's in our blood.
Now you tell me, why does most of the spam I get originate in Queensland??

Seems very related to social capital and institutions to me. For example, in the US (and many other places) there is much social capital between people that leads to enough trust to have such institutions as a checking system. Many countries don't even have a functional checking system. We get approached by new webmasters that ask where they will cash their checks.
The idea that you should trust your family, trust your neighbor, trust your bank, trust your employer, the puritan work ethic, etc. Though these beliefs have been in decline lately they still function successfully.
In many eastern european countries, for example, these institutions didn't evolve to the same level of functionality because of totalitarian state systems, lack of consistency in political ideologies, and other more random factors.
Look at the world and you see some societies where people have higher trust for government that others, some where people have more trust for their neighbors, some where people have more regard for the institution of the family, and so on. Often there are parables or stories that illustrate these beliefs.
Similarly people's views of crime, what is acceptable behavior, and so forth are shaped by such external factors.
So, social.

Colin I disagree 100%
The #1 fraudulent scamming cheating criminal sons of bitches of the entire world on the web are from Montreal Canada.
How do you explain that?
Timon
06-14-2003, 05:48 AM
Also if it is true what deepundercover claims about The Netherlands, then how is your answer relevant to his question?
Almighty Colin

Because social theories can only explain some of the factors some of the time. You know that. There will be an exception to any broad explanation of human behavior that will be applicable in some places and not in others.
I don't know if that's true about Montreal or the Netherlands or how one would even quantify it. I think it's applicable to many places and certainly the fraud rate is comparatively high in places like Eastern Europe where it does make sense.

duh!
countries i've had the most trouble with in order:
belgium
russia
ukraine
portugal/spain
'networks' started up in montreal, phoenix ... all it takes is a couple of people at a party talking about how they scam affiliate programs and a few of them try it and there's a scammer town ... we would often have 10 accounts with different names and addresses and pay to details, but same city, all doing the same method of cheating. Either 1 company really well set up, or 10 'buddies' playing around.
The thing with cheats, is that they often don't even realize they are cheating, they just interpret the rules differently ... just look at that sponsor post sites ... the things scams webmasters think they should be paid for is laughable. But, ignorance is no excuse! NO SOUP FOR YOU!
Timon

They must have a lot of parties in Montreal then because since my first proggy came out French Canada has always been the cheating hotbed.
Although lately 70% of credit card fraudsters come right from within the USA.

We have seen the same thing (well not 70% for US), but numbers rise from "good" countries (US, Germany, UK etc.)... usualy when we look into it, then its either remailers, or "friends" who are at those address, and the "bad guy" is hiding in some east european country.
Do not have the stat, but its a trend.

This deepundercover character starts the same thread based on inaccurate assumptions on every single webmaster board on the web and then fails to join in the discussion.
No more free intel from me ;-)

"Hurting you [DUC] is a fond dream for me. It's something I'm looking forward to. I'm not chasing you. I'm not looking for you. I just know that one day you'll pop your head up at one of the webmaster meetings. You have no idea how much I am looking forward to it. You'd have to do something pretty nice. You'd have to make do on all the bad things you said and inferred about me" - Scott

Another webmaster of a medium-sized company (more than 15 employees) told me this (most criminal porn Internet activity originates in Netherlands, Russia) and asked me to investigate.
My idea of a journalistic investigation is to post something inflammatory to the boards.
I apologize if I have not been completely accurate, circumspect, journalistic, ethical and responsive.
Please don't sic Scott on me.

Where does this info come from?
I've never seen any real problem with affiliates from Holland.
Missauga, Ontario on the other hand is a cheaters hotbed, perhaps as cj said, perhaps there are other factors.
Most programs don't let the E. European resellers in to start with, for very good reason -- steal one sale a day and live like a king over there....

duck, you should check your tape recorder he might have been talking about micheal jackson cheating on his monkeys in neverland and you thought Netherland.
every Dutchman i've ever dont biz with has been honest to the bone
the reason Russians, E Europeans cheat is they've been bread over many decades to cheat the system to survive, combine that with economal factors and here we are today. At the same time it gives them a lot of creativity and entrepreneural abilities and hunger to succeed if they put their mind in the right direction.
Remember everyone cheats the system in one way or another, but only some get caught.
