Here's a study from a spam blocking software company. I'm actually surprised the porn spam numbers aren't higher than what they claim.

from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/06/0...reut/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/06/09/spam.children.reut/index.html)

One in five children opened and read spam, the study found, and more than half of the them checked e-mail without parental oversight.

Among the other findings in the survey:

• 80 percent of the respondents said they are bombarded by sweepstakes messages.

• 62 percent received spam touting dating services.

• 47 percent received e-mails with links to pornographic Web sites.

• 34 percent have felt uncomfortable receiving spam.

The key here is 'without parental oversight'. This is the real problem imo....

Yup. Though I must admit I'm shocked the porn numbers aren't higher.

Well this becomes tricky as you can't possibly expect parents to be there every single time the child (up to age 18) gets an email. There are issues of privacy, children not cooperating, etc. that even the most dilligent of parents would find this task impossible really when you are trying to make a living in global recession.

I mean, really some kids answer their emails in libraries I'm sure.

Why don't we look the wolf in the eye and recognize that spam is really the problem here and hopefully this problem will be addressed shortly. I don't normally favor government legislation of internet, but enough is enough.

The problem is parents who let their kids surf the web unsupervised.

I've said it before. The internet is not some little private cove that you have all to yourself, it is a huge world filled with good, bad, pretty, ugly, whatever.

Anybody who lets their kids venture out into that world without supervision should not be shocked or offended when their kids end up in the bad part of town.

Recession has nothing to do with it.

Think of the internet like cable tv... cept you ordered ALL the channels.

Turn the fucking computer OFF. put a bios level password on it. it's that simple.

How many kids that like receiving porn are going to admit to receiving porn ? Especially if they have discerned that the logical result of the survey is to find a way to address the problem of them receiving porn?
