They are selling a ghost in a bottle for $50,000, what makes you think fraud has anything to do with it?
Ebay is hit or miss, you sometimes get great deals, sometimes not... whatcha looking at Colin?

i would not be surprised if some "auction laws" or some sort of legislation was created in the future to keep some of these bozos from hurting each other.
hopefully, it will come only after Colin can gets the winning bid for his "Ghost in a Bottle"

Was thinking about decorating the office with decades old computers and mainframe parts in a strange art-deco theme.

Both buyer and seller need a support group ;-)

i think that what you would call a "personal choice in lifestyles" - could often be more accurately characterized as "deeply disturbing behavior"

Colin, I bought a ton of computer stuff there. All Xbox games I own come from eBay, as well as my retro Game Gear :)
Never had a real problem.
How do they prevent fraud? Just look in the sellers profile for good ratings from buyers. I know some people cheat with that (since the thread here last week), but in general I think it is a good measure.
A good friend of mine collects old computers, he has every gaming computer from the 70s-80s up to now. Most bought on eBay, 0 problems.

I bought a ton of antique quilts, Finster art, glass art etc. a few years ago. Only had one problem and it resolved itself.
BUT, I have heard horror stories. My theory was to never send more $$$ than I could afford to lose. B)

Dos Tips for Ebay-
1. Dont buy anything from outside the US. Makes it harder to sue em. My policy is dont buy anything thats too expensive from anyplace you cant affort to fly to...vigilante justice.
2. Pay with PayPal.They have an option on there where they insure 100% satisfaction. Plus if your screwed paypal/ebay will shut the thieving fuckers down.
3. Read the user feedback. You can tell real quick by reading what everyone says about their buying experience. You can also see if they are a verified paypal user etc etc so that your buying from someone you can track down [see tip 1].
All in all ebay has been a good to me. Peaches is just jealous I outbid her for those "lesbian devil girl shirts". If your anuber ebayer you can figure out an angle to make some serious cash and also drive some traffic to your sites...which aint a bad think considering youve got millions of qualified buyers looking at those page.

True - now I've not got nothing to wear to the SuperWalmart. :(
Paypal used to say "Our job is to get to the cash to the seller, like an ATM - if you're screwed over, tough.". Have they changed their policies now that they're owned by Ebay?
And I agree 100% about not doing anything out of the country. I know someone who's ticked because he sent $3K via Western Union to someone in Russia, never got the product and now can't contact them. Doh! :zoinks:

First trick to eBay is same as any other auction. Know what you're bidding on and know exactly what it's worth. Dont get caught up in the action and overpay.
They give you enough tools and information now to spot most of the scamsters. As GonZo said, read the feedback for one thing. And I also agree that it is safest not to spend more than you're willing to piss away anyhow. Treat it like a large yardsale, especially when dealing with individuals without a long history.
My big fault with eBay isn't any fear of getting scammed. It's the damned sniping of bids. For an item where there are actually competing bidders, it comes down to being a contest of who can get the very last bid in before the auction expires.
It should be a contest of who is willing to pay the most. Onsale.com always had this down pat. They had a scheduled end time for bidding, but if there were still bids coming in at expiration time, the auction was extended. It would be extended indefinitely until 5 minutes passed without a new bid. That is a much better way to run an auction. Bidder who wants the item most gets it and the sellers gets the maximum any of his bidders were willing to pay. That doesn't happen under the current eBay methodology.

Been a seller on eBay for almost 2 years... Do not think for a second, that the fraud does not occur on both sides for the auction equation. I do not offer PayPal since they do insist on having access to your business checking account for automatic debit for "chargeback" disputes... I already have my own merchant account, so I can take credit cards directly. I'd rather not have another 3rd party with access to my business funds, without any responsiblity spelled out for the consumer. Also, the items I sell are $11.00 or less, and they are sold as a fixed price auction, so that does change the bidding process significantly.

I have it hooked up to a DLP projector in my Home Theater, which gives a pretty impressive result. The surround sound system is so badass I think all neighbors in a 25 mile radius have had to relocate ;-)

When I was buying a lot on Ebay, I had a program (I'll look around for the name - I think it was $20 or so) that put in a bid within a user decided time before the bid was over. You put in the highest you were willing to go, and it would jump in there and bid that amount before the auction was over. I think I set mine at 1 minute. This kept those that didn't have a higher bid on file from having time to get an email, and rebid. :okthumb:
It also allowed you to leave and not have to worry about babysitting the auction. :)

I have purchased old arcade games on ebay (£100 for a Bubble Bobble machine) and a few servers. If you actually get something where you have to go and phsically pick it up and then pay it is 100% safe. I have never purchased anything where I have never met the buyer though.
