Not so usual, though, was self-confessed mass spammer Ronald Scelson, who said he also supported national legislation. It would, he claimed, make his operation, Scelson Online Marketing, legal.
Scelson said until six months ago, his bulk mailings for insurance, mortgages, vacations and automobiles contained valid return addresses, opt-out provisions and was clearly labeled as advertising. Since then, he said, "bullying" tactics by anti-spam groups have forced him to mask his e-mail identity and engage in the usual deceptive mailing practices of mass mailers to disguise their tracks.
He has a good point, if there were policed rules, *most* people would just ... follow them

AOL is the biggest hypocrites on this deal. But the fact is they are a large company, with many lobbyist, so they will get what they want.
Not only do they sell their list, but they also spam through 3rd parties - I get a few a week, and they flood your mailbox with their CDs....

If you remember from using AOL a while back that they even included the opt in email as a feature when promoting what was their "Marketplace" product.

in the city yesterday, there's a park just on the edge of the cbd, there was a yahoo van thing, one of those big portable things that has computers in it ... it was painted bright purple with yahoo all over it ... there was a table set up with petitions on it to send to the government to pass a bill against spam. the 'van' was also promoting some new yahoo spam filter system ...
i wanted to go up and inform the volunteers they picked the right (or wrong, whichever way you look at it) city to start this campaign in :biglaugh:
