Yeah that is similair to something that happen a while ago in Hawaii...

Pilot managed to land the plane, I think only 1 person was sucked out - but the others had to clean the doo-doo ouot of their underwear.... the seatbelts kept them locked down. They were in process of landing so they were not going that fast I guess...

I vaguely remember some photos of it, some people took - I could not imagine....

Just realized that something smells fishy here.....

from the BBC version:

"At least 200 passengers are feared dead after they were sucked out of a plane at 7,000 feet when a door opened. "

"The Russian-made aircraft suffered a catastrophic loss of cabin pressure which caused a "terrifying vacuum" while flying over Congo. "

Hmmm..I am not an expert on aero anything, but at 7,000 feet I would not imagine that the air pressure would be a problem. Every year I go skiing between 9,000 and 12,000 feet in the rockies, haven't had to be pressurized yet. So, either there is a mistake and that should be 17,000 or somewhere higher, or, they were pushed ?

Just a thought.......

your not flying at a speed of 400-600 mph when your skiing

Well, maybe you're not, but I tend to take everything on the straight :D

But seriously, I had not really considered that, but still, most accidents that I have heard of with pressurization have always been at much higher altitudes...

Like I said, it was just a thought ....

nbc news just said they were at 30k feet

so im sure the real details will be out if the govt there wants it done

Yeah... I just found ABC's report and they are saying 33,000 feet.

That makes sense to me.....

Everytime I went to russia, I flew on Aeroflot, and its the best airline I have ever used, period.

Not to mention they still let you smoke in the rear seats of the plane.

But where I was going with this was, on the flight over, empty, coming back, the plane was packed with russians.

Understand that I've never taken a physics class, so I could be VERY wrong on this, but if you're being sucked out of plane going hundreds of miles an hour, at 33K feet, aren't you pretty much toast almost the second you're sucked out? I'm wondering if there was ANY "moments of fear" and if the passengers even knew what was happening. :(

this whole story is fishy.

140 people died
200 people died
as many as 400 people on the plane
everyone died
the plane was at 7000 feet.
the plane was at 33,000 feet
only 7 people died
no one was hurt, everyone is fine and accounted for.

The Ukrainian owners of the plane said no one was hurt and that life was just peachy. Congolese government said 7 people died. CNN, BBC immediately said "all 200 passengers" then later changed it to 160 or something. other news agencies said 33,000 feet... some said 7000 feet. i was just blown away at flipping around to see that everyone was saying something different.

but the Ukrainian Military was quick to clear it up... and that one took the cake:

"The Ukrainian Defence Ministry spokesman confirmed, quoting the general director of the Ukrainian Air Transportation Company, Andrei Kukin, that the Il-76 captain looked at the instruments in the cockpit 41st seconds after the aircraft took off from Kinshasa airport. The indicators on them showed that the plane had been unsealed. "Acting in full compliance with the flying instructions, the captain asked for permission to land and did that safely. Neither the people no the cargo or the plane were hurt or damaged," Khivrenko went on to say"

probably both embarassing and a disaster considering it was security officials for Lawrence Kabila and who knows who else. it probably was not even an accident.

here is itar-tass report.

well... If 160 or 200 people died then it won't be long before we know the actual truth... Someone is going to know something and say something...

The truth can be found... sometimes you got to dig through an awful lot of shit to find it though....

OMG

The HORROR these people must have endured

hours of holding on to ropes and cargo nets while family flew past them and out the rear door

sarettah

Yes Forest, it would be horrible....

But, even in that story there are problems....

at the beginning:

"Terrified passengers told how they had gripped ropes and netting for nearly two hours"

Later in the story:

"The flight crew returned the plane to Kinshasa, 45 minutes after the flight took off for the southeastern city of Lubumbashi"

Which is true? If they were holding on for nearly 2 hours, then they did not return 45 minutes later, or vice versa.

Then:

"Two officials at Kinshasa's international airport told The Associated Press that the death toll was 129."

"He told AP that 350 people were aboard the plane when it took off, including 100 women and children -- meaning as many as 250 people had died. "

So, the death toll is anywhere from 129 - 250 according to CNN.

Something is still fishy here.
