"World peace, or world domination, and when you got rid of the trick mirrors of rhetoric and bombast, weren't they really the same thing?"

Ok I can agree with or follow the idea, but not agree with the expression of it as it is above.
The world peace concept as expressed above leads to an any means justifying the ends mentality

Extra points if you can tell me the novel the line comes from B)

Nice line. I like it. I don't know where it is from though. <_<

Sounds like a nod to Pax Romana. Conquer the known world and there's no one left to fight.

The usual goal of war is peace with terms.

Ever read Clausewitz' "On War"? Clausewitz said "War is a continuation of politics by other means"
and I think that has led to the popular dictum "War is an extension of politics".

Haven't read Clausewitz' "On War" yet, will have to chew on that statement for a little

It is a great quote, and does make a lot of sense....

One can dominate the world in many ways, on many levels, and does not always have to be militarily. There may come a time when military power is obsolete... but it won't happen in our life times.

Clausewitz (http://www.clausewitz.com/CWZHOME/CWZBASE.htm).

Some quotes:

"The aggressor is always peace-loving; he would prefer to take over our country unopposed"

"War is not an independent phenomenon, but the continuation of politics by different means"

"If war is part of policy, policy will determine its character. As policy becomes more ambitious and vigorous, so will war, and this may reach the point where war attains its absolute form. . . . Policy is the guiding intelligence and war only the instrument, not vice versa"

"The first principle is: act with the utmost concentration [trace the ultimate substance of enemy strength to the fewest possible sources; compress the attack on these sources to the fewest possible actions; and subordinate minor actions as much as possible]"

"The second principle is: act with the utmost speed [every unnecessary expenditure of time and every unnecessary detour is a waste of strength; take the shortest possible road to the goal]"

"The first task, then, in planning for a war is to identify the enemy’s center of gravity, and if possible trace it back to single one."

Reading those quotes it occurs to me Clausewitz must have been on the winning side often, as the victory writes the views, dictates and or history

Then I go to the site Colin provide a link to (much thanks!!) and one of the first things I read
" the Prussian army corps of which he was chief of staff played a key role (fighting at Wavre) in the final defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo."

You'll get a good eye roll (or not) when I reveal who wrote the quote the thread started with

Vick,

You got me. I was thinking the older school of American Novelists though I don't think i would have guessed it anyway.

That's one of the King novels I haven't read.
