This is brilliant.

Syria has submitted a resolution in the UN Security Council that would declare the Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction.

Are they asking for UN inspections ?

Slav,

This is from Unitednationsnews.com. No more details than this.

UNITED NATIONS: Apr 17 (PNS) - Syria has introduced a resolution in the U.N. Security Council to declare the Middle East a region free of weapons of mass destruction.

Syrian ambassador to the United Nations, Mikhail Wehbe said the resolution if an important factor for the peace process in the region. At their meeting in New York, twenty two Arab countries expressed their support for the resolution which calls for a region free of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.

The Arab league’s representative to the United Nations, Yahya Mahmassani said that all the nations including Israel are included in the resolution.

Several other Security Council members including Pakistan, China and Russia expressed support for the resolution. In Damascus, the Syrian Foreign minister Farouk Al-Shara rejected U.S. allegations that his country has weapons of mass destruction.

He said Syria is ready to sign a treaty under the U.N supervision to make the whole Middle East a zone free from such weapons. In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell said his country his country has a very vigorous diplomatic exchange with Syria and he would go to Damascus for talks with President Bashara Al-Assad.

I wonder if Israel is considering declaring itself a nuclear state before this goes down. Why has it not?

Will the US veto? How could that be justified?

Will be interesting.

Colin, does one really need a declaration ?
It could have sparked a nuclear race in the middle east.

afterall we all know Israel has nukes, at least 200.

Syria has a reason to be concerned
Israel almost used nukes against them in 73 war when US delayed shipments of needed weapons to Israel.

Overall it might be good for the whole region and peace between Syria and Israel

Obviously they'd prefer not to declare themselves a nuclear state. What if, because of political pressure, the US didn't veto such a resolution and it passed? [No idea. Who knows?]

No one is going around trying to get any of the declared nuclear states to give up their weapons. It might be the only plausible move.
