View Full Version : Madonna & War

Saw an interview with Madonna last night. She said she has decided not to release her new video that carries an anti-war message to MTV right now. She said something like "This is supposed to be a democracy and I should be able to say whatever I want and I can't."
Her definition of "democracy" aside, the government isn't preventing her from exercising her right to free spech. She can say whatever she wants. It takes great courage to say something that will be unpopular with a large group of people. She may have and exhibit that courage or she may not. I don't know if the record company or MTV has put pressure on her or whether she has made her own decision regarding this but she can, at any time, say what she wants.
Democracy intact. The same forces that cause people to purchase music of artists they like and appreciate for whatever reason - and there are many - can cause them to dislike you and your music. Obviously Madonna is aware of that and she is exhibiting wisdom in not releasing an anti-war message video in the US right now.
Courage versus Wisdom. She's exercising her will.

sounds like she finally started reading her fan mail from MassiveCock.
:(
i have heard a lot of referrences to people not being able to speak their mind, speak out against the administration or against the war. too fucking bad when they exist in a business that is 100% dependent on popularity and thier ability to manipulate that... then realize that they cant do the "unpopular thing" without losing their audience.
similar remarks have came from Barbara Streisand, Charly Sheen and several other convienently concerned bazillionaires who are better in tune with their peoples than the average joe. I guess orbiting the stratosphere in a private jet, or a 52 Inch TV in Malibu on the beach, gives one a better perspective on the needs of the tortured, murdered, oppressed and abused in lovely countryside of EatingDirt, Starvationstan.
i think the Hollywood left and similar people are really upset that thier "Hug Saddam" campaign is not popular with anyone... least of all the Iraqis with whom they are so "concerned" about. Oh well... now they can move on to Robert Mugabi and others accused of torture, genocide, murder, terrorism and continue to protect and promote them by preaching "peace through appeasement".

Is this the same courageous woman who expressed herself by publishing nude pictures of herself and performing erotically on stage? The same woman who, I think, relished negative publicity and parleyed it into a successful career?

About the only people more pathetic than those who would actually listen to the political opinions of a pop star are those who get their panties in an uproar when they say something that they don't agree with.
Just my opinion ...

so you're saying the opinions of poor people are more important and have more validity than those of the wealthy?
interesting....

Nope. People that call people pathetic for getting their "panties in an uproar over the political opinions of a popstar" are in fact even more pathetic. That's precisely what my fortune cookie from "China Grill" said today. Amanda's fortune, if you're interested, read "When one dog barks at a shadow, a hundred bark at the sound". Speaking of which, we seem to have entered into a good game of Chinese Boxes. Shall we continue?

Madonna is the ultimate promoter/marketer.
She released the video, then yanked it quick. Then she got more articles and buzz written about a video 99% of the people will never see...
She is brilliant.... she knows how to play consumers, and the media like a fiddle...

I agree completely Mike. Even her saying 'I can't say what I want to say.' is giving her the attention she desires....

i am not saying that poor people have a more valid opinion about how the world works. i am saying that Martin Sheen does not just because he is famous.
i think about the Hollywood Communist Elite like this...
Hollywood is a place where people center their existence around trying to get paid to be something that they aren't. The better they get at being something they aren't, at pretending to be people they aren't and at pretending they have emotions and feelings they dont... the more credibility people seem to feel they have... and the more they feel they need to "speak out".
That in my opinion, is retarded. its like having credibility as being the perfect liar and then being expected to tell the truth.

Sorry ... when I hear a phrase like "Hollywood Communist Elite" I just sort of assume it's Torone ...
either that, or look around for my grandfather. Of course he - like the rhetorical relevance of that phrase - has been dead since 1962.
My bad ...

Hmm, I disagree. Acting is a job. You are making it look like these people strive to be something they are not in their personal life....that their job somehow magically creates a mental insufficiency that migrates to their personal lives and creates this 'need to "speak out". (well, for the most part I disagree, unless you count Mr. Jackson and Anne Hecke..lol)
The REASON they feel the need to speak out is because they have the avenue to do so. People tend to hear those who've been in their livingrooms for years and years....oh those familiar faces.
Come on, if you had the avenues to get your position across to the world on an important subject and know that you have a certain 'influence' and might be able to promote 'change' that supports your position, wouldn't you take the opportunity? I would.
Is their position right? I have no idea.....but they have the the unique ability and resources to express it to the world.
'Stars' always have, and always will have a certain influence on 'the people'...why do you think that old guy is head of the Pro-Gun organization? (sorry, I don't remember his name or the org. .....but you know who I mean..lol)
It's just the way it is.....

Gigi,
I completely agree with you. I also think Madonna made a good career move - as always.
I do disagree with her statement that democracy is not working because people may decide to
not buy her CD's based upon her statements. That is always the case. Free purchasing decisions are at the heart of free markets. Someone's freedom to choose to buy or not buy her product is completely the opposite of what she is claiming.
Her strategy is the correct one for her. When she was young and unknown she did outrageous things that increased her exposure and popularity. Now, as a well-known artist, politically unpopular statements would be damaging.
I disagree with her statement. I don't disagree with her. Her move is the right one for her career.
