I heard on CNBC that people who file EARLY get audited the most...
I don't know if it's true or not.
i would have thought that those filing for extensions would have been more likely to get audited.
My extension for went out yesturday, so will let you know :)

They also said last year, the ones that e-filed are less likely to get audited but that would change as e-filing become more used.
I think its best to send taxes in on the 14th or 15th when its chaos :-)
I must work harder at being a failure, I should not have to pay every year.

Lee if you were a failure you would be able to apply for the earned income tax credit and make money.
I am fileing an extension, but doubt I will have to send in any more money - a few companies I am partners in which has little activity have not completed returns....
Still sucks seeing money go out the door.... What really hurts is quarterlies are not to far off... everytime I think I have made progress, quarterlies come and drains me!!

I filed about 2 weeks ago. Overpayment on estimated went toward my account already. I think I'm in a "must audit" situation for at least the next few years still but they'll probably deal with that after the bulk of regular people's taxes are dealt with.
My OIC case has FINALLY been assigned (was submitted in early September) so I'm guessing having so many cooks in my kitchen will only make it all take longer.

I heard ,from an auditor, that the IRS audit budget runs out early so they tend to audit the early filers. But they do retain amounts to get the "iffy" ones.
Hope all you "patriots" are/have paid your taxes :)

Nick, so you know...
from $12,000 you paid to Oprano last year,
$4200 were paid as income tax to the United States Tresury.
I personally enjoy the fact that it's YOUR money purchased the piece of the bomb which went on the Saddam's head.
Have a nice day, you, war monger!

I have no problem paying taxs, I just think the amount is way to high. A flat tax would be much nicer.
I understand your point Serge that if we were not in the tax level we are, we would be eating Rice a Roni every night.... but still, if could just hold on to a little more, I could do more - including investing, and growing new companies - which in the long run would help me pay MORE taxs!

I'll put mine in the mail at the last minute as always. Let me hold on to my money a few hours more :)
I don't mind paying taxes and I think the amounts are fair (mostly because I don't make as much as most of you - especially THIS year :( ), but I HATE how it's spent. That's what ticks me off more than anything - my taxes go to paying for welfare mothers to spit out another kid, paying for drug dealer gunshot victims with no insurance, and of course all the other bogus pork that spends billions w/ seemingly no accounting.
But I guess until we elect Wig President, and Michael Vice President, we're stuck with what we have

I only bothered with the Corporations this year that are due March 15. It seemd that no matter how hard I work at getting the info to the accountants early - they still file for an extension. I even went back to "cold" Indiana last year in Feb. (and almost got snowed in) to make sure I got everything done - so what did the accountants do - still filed for a fu*** extension.
So, I decided this year, I wasn't going to worry about it until I go home in May!!
BTW - anyone know how to reach Paul Nash? Just saw him at Pheonix, and forgot to get his new info.

I filed for an extension for the first time ever this year. I just have too many things going on at the moment. The worst part is I'm probably going to get a refund since I lost a shitload of money last year.
On a side note, one of my buddies from college worked for the IRS for several years. What he told me is that the system is programed to kick out so many returns from around 60 different groups they have set up for audit. From what he told me it's mostly a random process. He was one of the programers so he should know.

We must be doing something wrong, I know this woman that pays nothing into the Gov't and always gets back $2300 or more every year. She never reports any income, nada.
Damn medicare and SSN self employment taxes is what blows, I wish it were just a Federal issue.
Your right Mikie, I have to sink lower and do the earned income refund!
Sergie my little furball, you do spend to much time in front of computer, but as long as LadyLaw sits naked in front of the monitor, its hours well spent.
Ya heard it from a Nun :-) LOL

I always file extensions and normally wait till Sept. I've heard (I was married to a CPA) that audits are random and many times based on zip codes. That there is a ratio of areas that seem to have more shadey activity. Palm Beach, Dade and Broward are right up there and turn out many audits. Smaller towns not so many.
I'm not sure about efilings but it seems to me that if you hurry into the database you're more likely to get spit out for an audit sooner.
Audits suck. Keep good records, that's for sure.

I always wait until the last minute to do mine.
Don't know why, that's just the way it turns out every year.

I've filed for an extension every year and no *knocks on wood* audits so far...I heard that as long as you still owe them money (and that seems to be my "thing" - lol) that you don't have to worry AS MUCH about an audit. I dunno...I think they see me as a "sure thing" every year so they feel sorry for me and leave me alone....
Who knows? It's like the Grim Reaper...when it's your time to go, it's your time to go....
Happy Tax Day All! :nyanya:

I don't need no steenkin' extension...mine's long enough! :wankit:
One of my good friends in NC was a retired IRS auditor... in the days before electronic filing was as easy as a link from Paypal away, there were audit budgets, as Nick put it.
Filing an extension in a plain white envelope you addressed to the IRS yourself with a check for at least part of what you owed and then waiting til Aug 15 to post mark your return was the best way to NOT get audited...
The envelopes included with the return packets were bar coded to produce random results; filers are divided into categories like self-employed, construction, etc and allotments based on these categories were filled early, leaving much fewer slots for stragglers to get a 'random' audit.
I'm not sure how it works with the more electronic systems in place now, but I know it's not random :)
Oh and yes, I got one... seems one of my employers failed to send my w2 as instructed...
