FOX News nearly swept the cable news ratings last week scoring 14 out of the top 15 time slots. On Tuesday, The Fox Report with Shepard Smith raked in a cool 6.43 million viewers. O'Reilly Factor and Hannity/Colmes did well also.

What network do "Fondas, Baldwins and Streisands" work for?
I also thing that most people would prefer Readers Digest over the New Republic, prefer store bought white bread over home-made whole wheat, and would prefer Rush Limbarf to Wm. F. Buckley.
I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose
They love dirty laundry
Well I could have been an actor
But I wound up here
I just have to look good
I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
We got the bubble-headed bleach blonde
Comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash
With a gleam in her eye
It's int'resting when people die
Give us dirty laundry
Can we film the operation
Is the head dead yet
Y'know the boys in the newsroom
Got a running bet
Get the widow on the set
We need dirty laundry
You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em where they sit, kick 'em all around
Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pies
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry
We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When it's said and done
We haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down

More surprising is to find a western news-channel that is not occupied in bashing the elected government of its country :awinky:
I see it all over the western world - its what we think journalism is all about  I guess its sometimes easier for viewers to get away from channels (like BBC for example) who represent the viewer as part of a (partial) evil mechanism. I am not saying if its right or not - don't attack me there

O'Reilly is an exceptionally gifted debater but it's a probability game as to whether anything he says is actually true or not. He often states "facts" that are just not true.

I was getting a lot of my war news from BBC radio via the net until a few days ago, but finally got disgusted with the coverage and have scaled back considerably - the anti-war, anti American bias of a lot of the coverage was becoming just too obvious.
I am very glad that Rummy didn't tune into them over the past two days. He would have had a stroke.

Much journalism today starts with the assumption that people in power are lying and then construct a story from that assumption. The story is then picked up by other journalists that repeat the process.
Just because government officials lie some of the time does not mean they are lying ALL the time.

PornoDoggy: true. That’s what I meant. I got too annoyed from CNN and BBC interpertation of the "facts". There are many facts out there - its all about how/what you emphasis. Rumsfeld would indeed get all crazy if he saw it. The entire country is rid of Saddam and they go – “US troops brought looting and humanitarian crisis” – like everything was so golly good before.
Colin: hehe. True. Though O’riely doesn’t really claim what he says is always facts. A lot of times he say – we will wait and see who is right. He is crazy nonetheless
Danny: yep. People want to see what news medias give them – digested facts. Atleast Fox is not portraying the allied forces as more evil than the Iraqi old regime. I think that since we all agree news can not be totally objective - it is important to ALWAYS present things in perspective and references to the other side - they must not assume people already think that Saddam is bad and that we should now focus on the allied forces. They should always say things like: "Looting is going on in the streets, the museums were savagly destroyes. This is a shame. still - its much better than Saddam's mass rapes, execution in the streets and a regime that bought weapons with money that was intended for food to stop the starvation in Iraq."

It is funny, liberals always think they are the "sophisticated ones" and that normal Americans and Conservatives are simpletons who are there to be manipulated by evil politicians. This is continually shown during elections, where liberals primarily get their support in urban areas, while the heartland usually vote for conservatives. Many liberals consider the heartland and the south "flyover land"....
I love Foxnews, they do tend to report things on the conservative side - but they also do a good job, and are entertaining - look at their stats.
Colin you are right about Reagan and Fox News....a very good point. But I think Americans gettired of the CNNs and other liberal media outlets that are always insulting them.
I am happy Fox came around, I am thankful for Rush, and other conservative radio shows. The liberal domination of the media is starting to be changed.
I do not agree with everything Rush, O'Reilly and others put out there, but I think having their voices out there is important ( Just like having liberal voices out there) Conflict of opinion is good for everyone.
Another things O'Reilly and Rush understand is HUMOR....

I don't mean his opinions though. Just one example: I was watching his show a few weeks ago and he said there has never been anyone on al-Jazeera from the US to represent the opinion of the current US administration. However, I know that both General Myers and Condoleeza Rice have been on al-Jazeera.

I don't think either party has a monopoly on intelligence. I would guess both probably have the same bell-curved spectrum of idiots and savants.
It doesn't make sense to me to say that "people" want to see "digested facts", "simplistic news", ot "spoon-fed opinions". Rather, there is a wide spectrum of news coverage that people are interested in. Any active media source has an audience. Some like in-depth analysis, some like shows with two hosts that debate issues, some like blogs, some like opinion pieces, some like interviews wth former cabinet members such as Lawrence Eagleburger and Henry Kissinger who have been making the rounds lately.
I'm a news junky. I like them all.

Liberals make fun of the south and the heartland, conservatives never miss a chance to take a poke at either coast, dog bites postman ... only Rush could make a story out of that.
The liberal disdain for the south and midwest is there, but it's more an attitude than a political strategy. I doubt the same can be said for the tendency for some conservatives to play the urban card. I see a great deal of that here in the boondocks, and Ashcroft was very good at playing it during his Missouri political carrer.
Of course, I'm sure they only do it because the urban areas are full of liberals.
Using the PornoDoggy Unscientific System I have evaluated the level of bias of CNN - they have to be the most unbiased.
Both Mike AI and RawAlex are equally strident about how biased they are, thus cancelling each other out.

HAHA PD you and RawAlex see eye to eye. You guys think the same.
I like how you are trying to seperate yourself from your liberalness, and make it seem that you are not on the frindges.
Liberals hate the "L" word.... and run away from it, especially politicians in open forums.
Colin, of course you are right when it comes to both parties. Beleive me I think many Republicans are jackasses... well I think most politicians are jackasses....
Oh and PD you are right, Rush does blast the liberal elite in NY and the left coast... but there is some truth to what he says, that is why it is so funny. Of course these liberal elites also love to stick their feet in their mouths constantly.... where the great unwashed in the heartland do not have access to get on TV when they want - they are not like Steisand, Baldwin, Sheen, etc...

I'm quite serious. CNN must be doing something right if they can piss off both sides equally.
And of course Rush blasts the coasts ... he's carrying on in the time-honored tradition of Republicans since at least Nixon (and the Buchannan lines delivered by Agnew like "In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism" and "encouraged by an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize ... our nation" are classics). Absolutely nothing new here.
It does not take much to appear to be to the far left when posting about things political on Oprano, Mike. That being said, I don't attempt to deny the fact that I'm a liberal.
The thing about it is, when I watch/read/listen to the news I want facts. I don't want a liberal bias, I don't want a conservative bias - I want it as neutral as possible. MOST of the time I hear people - left or right equally - denouncing media outlets as biased it's simply because they don't like part of the information delivered, or feel that information which runs counter to their opinions is given too much attention.

Ulfie, the guy from CNN said he also did not report somethings because he did not want to get CNN booted out of the country. What is the point of being in the country if you cannot report the "News"?
That is why many people think CNN was part of the propaganda arm of Iraq.

i think this is true in any media. all media is biased in my opinion, intentionally or not. US media cannot possibly show things from a balanced perspective to someone in Syria for example. They percieve a completely different reality that is reinforced by cultural and political realities there as well as their own state run media. The show the news from a completely different perspective and what is newsworthy in BloatedGoat, Syria - is probably not news in the Western world.
Al Jazeera (once nicknamed "All Osama, All the time") justifies thier reports as "showing the other side" and think they are more balanced because they are showing what the West does not report on the greater war against Islam.
Great Britain shows the news from a British perspective, they show the news as it is relevent to their own citizens and their own reality. I have never really thought it to be "anti-American" - I just considered it to be one more perspective.
BBC in my opinion, is much more liberal in their reporting on most things. Certainly more so that CNN. I dont mean that in a good or bad or political way... i just mean that they tend to focus on the human side of everything vs economic or other.
if anyone noticed BBC and CNN are fighting a little marketing war now where CNN seems to have lost in the past in Europe where Europeans prefer news that in my opinion, is more consistent with their own attitudes, beliefs or perceptions.
very funny to watch people on GFY and their attitude of the media.
CNN = brainwashed, propaganda machine
BBC = the one truth
Now BBC has a new tagline -
"BBC - Demand a broader view"
So does CNN, but i forgot it.
"CNN - fair, balanced... blah blah..."

Mike, I guess my whole point it that it is much ado about nothing. Most of the people "piling on" to this story are doing so only for the chance to take a poke at CNN for it's failure to spin the news the way they want it to be spun.
What CNN did is absolutley no different than what every news organization, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, has done in places like Moscow until the early 90s, in Berlin from 1932-42, Peking to this day, and who the hell knows how many other places - trade NOT telling certain stories in order to keep some access.
Right? Wrong? I don't know ... I wondered about when reading Shirer's books on WWII, when reading I don' t know how many books by former journalists who'd reported from the Soviet Union; and I wonder about it today.
I think you'd be quite suprised at some of the folks who are probably glad CNN stayed as long as they did. I suspect that the whole story got told to somebody, even if the stories didn't appear over the air. I don't know that to be true in this particular case; the only reason I'm even speculating on it is that it has happened and does happen in an awful lot more places than people think.

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is exellent considering it was written in the early 60s (and a great deal more information has become available since); and The Collapse of the Third Republic paints a really good picture of the chaos in France leading up to the disgrace of Vichy, including the profound role that the French Right played in the defeat. And more to the original point of this thread is Berlin Journal, describing his experiences reporting from Berlin from 32 until 40 or 41.
If only the French General Staff had paid as much attention to an obscure little book on tank warfare written by an obsure French Col. (C. DeGaulle) as the Germans did...
