that only UN can legitimize the new Iraqi governemt...
may I ask,
who the fuck was legitimizing the governements BEFORE 1950 when UN was created?
God?
Christ?
Mohammed?
UN has become a self serving useless organization and the faster we pull out of it -
the better

The UN is an elitist organization that enforces the existing power structure in the world. Not a single resolution can be passed in the Security Council against China, UK, US, Russia, or France. How do people in Japan, Germany, Pakistan and India feel about the UN?
There will be soem interesting debates on the world stage in the coming years.

Here's an idea. Only Iraqis can legitimize the new Iraqi government.
I hope to see Iraqis burning French flags on the streets of Baghdad. :okthumb:

I think pulling out of an organization and leaving everyone else in it is a bad idea.

Colin, without us they will collapse,
they outlived it's usefulness,
we should start the NEW UN...
I have a good name for it

I thought it was about 1/3 and we're late on payments. Am I wrong?

Actually, yes, you are. Bush paid them up-to-date shortly after he took office.

Torone,
I stand corrected. Looks like we're current.
Did some research.
Legislation was passed in November of 1999 that agreed to the back payments of $926 million to the UN over three years [Helms, Biden bill] The bill required that the US share of dues be dropped to 22%. On Dec 23, 2000 the UN agreed.
Backpayments totalling $682 million were made in 1999 and 2001. $244 million was paid in 2002. Ted Turner chipped in some also.
Bush's "paid them up to date" was signing off on the payments agreed to in the Helms, Biden agreement.
