either Guardian wanted to be the first one to say he survived or British intelligence is as good as i always thought they are.

Slav, late last night Fox news reported that it could have been a reverse intelligence operation by Saddam. The theory was he was testing to see how his communcations have been tapped, so he set up a obvious test that would get us to act if we indeed had his lines taped.
I would not put it past Saddam. He is no dummy. You do not stay in power as a dictator for 20+ years by being stupid, and not paranoid.

i was in London a couple months ago and i was watching a show with some ex-SAS officers talking about the attempts to assassinate Saddam Hussein in the past. There was one attemp where a team from Mossad were planning to attack his car. They knew he would be alone, be the driver etc. They made one last run through while training out in the desert and accidentally killed their own team (with rockets) while practicing and attack on the car with a guy looking like Saddam at the wheel. apparently the car (Mitsubishi Montero) was completely destroyed but the guy playing Saddam walked away without a scratch - though the others were killed.
following that story, was an interview with an Iraqi exile which kept saying that the West needs to always factor in "luck" when it comes to dealing with Saddam. He pointed out the many situations where Saddam was very "lucky" and that it was a major key to his survivial.
i immediately thought of that while looking at the big crater left by several 2000 pound bombs where Saddam had apparently left only minutes before.
he does indeed seem to be quite "lucky"

I just heard the ham radio and Iraqi Propaganda Minister reports that the reason he couldn't show up for work is because retreating Coalition troops stole his car, so they could retreat faster....
