I've always wondered why, especially in adult spam, you'll get a title like....
Hot teens fuck big cocks! qwkomp
WTF is up with the gibberish at the end? It's just something I've noticed on a large percentage of adult spam and to a much lesser degreee non-adult spam. Any ideas of why it is there?

Back when I WASN'T spamming newsgroups for a paysite owning friend of mine :awinky:, a program I used added gibberish at the end of the subject in order to keep a bot from pegging it as spam (i.e. seeing the same subject repeatedly). Maybe that's the same concept at work here?

I never understood the alphabet soup approach either. I use numbers, it looks cleaner. :)
Oh yeah, I could tell you why but I would have to kill Sykkboy and I really don't want to.

I guess this would be a bad time to tell you that during that same time I also sifted through newsgroup pictures and sorted them to be posted on the same paysite :awinky: This was back in 1996ish - I've reformed and he's no longer even in the porn biz :)
And I also found out that back then Mindspring would let you blame spam on your teenager emailing his HS buddies and give a warning instead of cutting your account off, lol!

It is also done like that because it is harder to write a filter for this type of stuff... in outlook, you have to edit the subject line to filter, otherwise you won't filter anything.
It is the same reason why common subject lines are used in spam, like "dinner tonight?" or "sports scores" because you don't want a filter because it will also block out valid mail.

Suppose I shoulda thought of that myself but until recently I've never gotten much spam at all. No more than a couple a day. Unfortunately that has changed recently!!

Really Alex... I always thought it was supposed to be because it had a better chance being open.
Are you spamming now? You seem to have a lot of info.

Peaches is a spammer, Peaches is a spammer... :nyanya:
You know, I always wondered why the gibberish at the end of a spam worked... insofar as... When I create a filter in Outlook, I just grab the part of the subject before the *asdkjkalsd* garbage and never see it again. Can't AOL do that as well?
But alas, I still get 200+ spams a day because of normal subjects that I don't want to filter. That really annoys me.
Hasn't anyone come up with a piece of software that works with Outlook, where you can drag a spam and have it filter based on subject, who it's from, text, html, etc...? A "one or all of the above" approach? That would be cool as hell but I haven't found it yet.
No offense to anyone here who sends out "newsletters" though. Sometimes I wish I was doing it myself. :awinky:

I thought it was to protect spammers from complainers like alex :P ... the unique number or combination of letters allows the spammer to always match your address back to their database of addresses and remove the smart asses who keep complaining to spamcop but refuse to tell the spammer which email address they want removed.
:D

cj, it don't work, when I complain, I strip off all the ID codes all over the mail... I use codes like that on newsletters because it is faster to spot the bounces just checking the subject line... which is often quoted in bounce mails... :-)
I don't complain about too many now, only the seriously stupid ones (like the asswipe sending mail out today using "britney spears" as the from address... moron!).
Anthony, nope, don't spam, but knowing spam makes it easier to get legit messages to opt in clients. :-)

Yep, trying to track your email like that isn' t fullproof. Ppl like Alex just strip them out....
Most of the programs out there like send safe, stealth, all the ones that are windows based anyway have that capablity to put random lines in there. Course they also steal email addresses as well. =o)
Course if you had a list of known complainers, well that alone is worth a shitload of money. =o)

Duh, did it ever occur to you that's why you don't get removed? I don't want people on my lists that don't want to be on them. Why not make it easier to get you off my list instead of harder? I get spamcop complaints occasionally and idiots that strip off all the identifying info make it next to impossible for me to remove them. The people that leave that info in get removed immediately.

He also gives some guy free beer to pose in a few pictures here and there, but there's not an actual person affiliated with the username "Ulfie". Ulfie, honestly, if you are mailing scraped addresses or "single opt ins" you deserve all the shit you get. Try some basic filtering, things will be SO much better for you...
I have no pity on that stuff.

I don't like spam any more than the next person, but why would you make it harder to be removed?
We have a "no call" list here in GA for telemarketers. I could have not signed up and just fought with every telemarketer that called me, but it's a whole lot easier to slowly be removed from all the legitimate lists. That's pretty much what you're doing by making it easier to be removed. If you don't, the lists just get resold, don't they?
Sometimes you have to pick your battles B)
RawAlex
03-21-2003, 11:25 PM
peaches, because for each one that actually removes you, there is about 1000 that will turn around and add you to hundreds more lists... some people take a remove (even a spam cop complaint) as a reason to sign you up for more spam... often competitors lists that they want to fuck up. If you want ALOT of spam, opt out of a spam list.
Spam cop is a suckass bad solution, I NEVER USE IT... there are much better ways to plug spamholes.
Alex

Alex, your replies show you know nothing about sending email. I don't scrape email addresses. People sign up for things using their email address and then get mail. WOW, imagine that. Then they complain you are spamming them. Content doesn't grow on trees you know.
Anthony, I will give you a ring tomorrow or whenever you want. I'm going to bed now though. Been painting and cleaning all day so I'm kind of tired. One day this nightmare of painting will end. :)

Well, you can't drag and drop, but in outlook, you can set up message rules (tools/message rules) and one of the actions you can apply is "delete it".. You can set the rule to look at the from addy, the to addy, the subject, the message text, whatever you want.
Hope that helps

Ulfie, you don't seem to understand... I know spam. I get lots... and one of my partner companies sends a few mails out too.
People sign up - you do single opt in or double opt in? Do you collect email addresses on page one of a two page signup form? Do you confirm EVERY email address you mail to? Do you clearly indentify yourself in every mail you send, so that people can understand where the mail comes from? I am seeing more and more lists mailing multiple times per day, with no indentification in their mailings... so I can't tell sometimes I asked for from just pure spam.

Okay Anthony,
I'm going to try Spam Assassin. You talked me into it. :awinky:
I have set up many many filters in Outlook to delete spam, but after a while just hitting shift + delete takes less time. I'd love to be able to drag something to spam filter and effectively say "hey, anything that looks even a little bit like this email in any way whatsoever goes to my deleted items."
I can dream, can't I? heh

Voo,
It's a great little program. However, it will cut down your spam by a good margin, really good actually. But there are those out there that know how to get around it. But the filters are soo good, that it's a not very many.
Enjoy Brother!
The gibberish is usually an encoded email address. If the spam message is submitted to some kind of spam reporting service (SpamCop, etc.), the receiver's email address is usually hidden so this code is for the spamer to find out which email address the complaint comes from.

My early experience with "click here to unsubscribe" or "reply to unsubscribe" etc. was *always* that the spam increased.
The mere fact that you verified there was a real person on the end of that email address made it more valuable and boy oh boy, did it get sold.
Since figuring that out years ago, I haven't clicked one of those links since then.
Procmail and spamassassin are wonderful things (server level). Outlook sucks because it has to download the mail before filtering it (at least it did last time I checked, haven't used that virus-catcher for years, either).

That would certainly explain how you and I can be at the same places, in several different states, for several years, repeatedly and I never see you :nyanya:
I'm going to bed now though. Been painting and cleaning all day so I'm kind of tired. One day this nightmare of painting will end. :)
Don't forget my house is next. Just think, Mr. Stealth, I won't even know you're here! I'll walk in one day, and voila - different tacky bright colors on every wall. :bjump: And in all honesty, throw back a few beers and as long as it's not white, eggshell, or taupe, paint them whatever colors you want - I'm not picky. :okthumb:
I don't particularly give a fuck about spam, I usually have a look at it to see what's doing well for other people ;)
However, if the fucks running mr-cash.com don't stop sending me 20 goddamn emails a day that automatically open browser windows before you can even delete the email, I will see what I can do to get your ARS, Hustler and CEN accounts cancelled... there's no way in hell I opted in to receive that crap or anything actually on that email address.
It's all fun and games til someone doesn't get paid.
