WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The cafeteria menus in the three House office buildings will change the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries," a culinary rebuke of France, stemming from anger over the country's refusal to support the U.S. position on Iraq.
Utterly ridiculous.

I think I posted somewhere about the movement to boycott France...
I actually meant not buying French products. BTW, 'French Fries' didn't originate there.

"Freedom Fries"? I think the whole anti-French thing is just kinda silly and won't last long. There is precedent though. Many of you might remember being told this story as a kid. During World War I, Americans took to calling sauerkraut "liberty cabbage".
There was more. Many cities stopped teaching the German language, changed German street names, and a host of other *ahem* nutty things.
I bet Congress will change the signs back pretty quickly.

If memory serves they come from Belgium, but 'Belgian Fries' doesn't quite have the same ring does it.... :D

Canada wasn't immune to these things either...
Prior to Germany's attack on Poland, Kitchener, Ontario's name was Berlin.
They never changed it back.

hahahaha I was just going to say that...
I guess it's true, you do learn something new every day. But howcome it was named Berlin? I didn't realise the Germans had any history in Canada...

Trev,
The Kitchener area in south-western Ontario is one of the biggest German areas outside of Germany. It also throws the biggest Oktoberfest outside of Germany every year too. :stout:
Just a half hour down the road, you would find London, Ontario which is the biggest city in the area. It's complete with a Thames river running through it.

How many French soldiers does it take to save Paris?
Answer: No one knows...it's never been done.
