When I come to Oprano nowadays, I fully expect to be reading about 1 of 2 things guaranteed. Either football, or politics/war.
But what is with all of the claims that this or that or he or she or they are "anti-American"? It's been said over and over that not everyone has to agree 100% with America's stand on every political issue or foreign policy decision, but when someone does, they are curiously being labelled anti-American.
There are a ton of reasons why I'm proud to be Canadian. I get to live in a peaceful, wealthy nation and enjoy the fruits of having the richest nation in the world just to the south of me. Am I a fair weather friend? No, I don't think so. I don't feel this way. But I don't agree with everything my friends to the south believe or choose to believe. I don't have to. Free society says I can have my own opinions on these things.
When my American friends go off on their tangents of how their country is the best in the world, I mostly just stay quiet and think how much of the world they haven't seen. How many different cultures they know absolutely nothing or very little about. Or the assumptions made about other cultures (like the Dutch wear wooden shoes still! LOL) But I don't comment on these things. Why ruin someones opinion of themself? It makes no sense. But I do like it when someone actually gets interested in visiting and learning about the culture behind someone elses borders. When I go on vacation, I much prefer to visit another nation and learn about their history, rather than going to an all-inclusive and lay on the beach for 10 days.
Example. I know almost nothing about the Russian culture. I would love to visit one day and learn. From what I do know about it's history, I'm quite keen to learn, and eventually I will.

i feel just the same way. I would much rather explore cities and cultures than go to a beach that could be anywhere. I couldn't spend more than a day at a beach without getting very itchy feet.
Psssst Evil Chris since you enjoy learning about other cultures
Football season (American Football, not soccer) ended over a month ago :D
Edit added .....
Wondering why the title of this thread is Proudly non-American as opposed to maybe Proudly Canadian or Proudly a citizen of the world?
when you post as Proudly non-American it can put American's on the defensive a little

I will agree with you on this also Evil Chris.
Whenever we travel - although I admit our travels with 2 small kids has been limited to North America - we try to "dive in" to the culture, the area and explore all it has to offer. Spending the whole day at the beach is a very closed-minded way of visiting any area - unless that beach vacation is what you're looking for. Just rest and relaxation. Hey - there's something for everyone. But to really appreciate an area you need to taste the regional foods of the city, explore the cultural offerings - art, architecture, music - and sample everything you can in order to feel the full experience.
I am eager to visit the rest of the world someday soon and learn about how other people live. I feel that my country is the best for ME - for what I hold dear and what I want out of life. However, I wouldn't make such a claim that it is the best in the world. Everyone has their own opinions and points-of-view. I am proud to be an American - and feel very fortunate that we have the freedoms to visit and explore other countries around us without limitation. Do I feel we are better than others who are not American? Hell no! But having pride in one's country does not always equate in feeling superior to other countries.
I think we all have much to learn and appreciate about each other. Good post Evil Chris. Good thread. Hopefully we will all take the time to learn about countries and cultures outside of our own. It is a grand experience. Even while we are learning about others we are really learning more about ourselves.

What fries my onions is when you're in one of these great countries that are rich with history, culture and cuisine.... and you see these dipshits in your hotel that go out to eat at McDonalds. Like, your vacation is 2 weeks, you can eat Micky D's anytime back home, but you can't eat authentic french or russian or malaysian food back home any time you want..... the stupidity astounds me.
If you're going to visit a country... EXPERIENCE IT for crap sakes.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Too true!
When we went to Nawlins, we tried the Gator...when we hit Florida or San Francisco we always go for the fresh seafood....down in Mexico, we tried some interesting regional cuisine apart from the typical burrito and taco fare...Portland - THE Prime Rib capital as far as I'm concerned (thanks Todd!)...Denver...we tried the Buffalo burgers (yum!)...Atlanta - the creme brulle with peach sauce rocked - those Georgia peaches are amazing!...you gotta try the local foods. Screw Mickey D's - lol

That's a fine example... Heck, I've even tried the local "cuisine" in the UK. hehehe...
Vick, yes in retrospect I might have better chosen "Proudly Canadian" as the title. But your view on the currency issue holds no ground with me. Pay me in Euro, Pound Sterling, or Swiss Francs. It's all good to me. It just so happens that we base our currency around the US dollar. The US doesn't pay me... I pay me.
When traveling you want a good dining experience that reflects the city you're visiting and you don't want to have a dining experience that is a miss - wasted time and effort not to mention the opportunity to enjoy fine dining
Some things I been lucky with finding good dining anywhere
Usually I'm lucky and fall in with locals when traveling and can get solid recommendations - I'll always ask a few different people and go with the consensus
You can check the newspaper on line for a few weeks before you travel and read the restaurant reviews
Zagat also has good reviews and I've found them to be accurate
http://www.zagat.com/
Bartenders usually know the city well and were good dining can be found (at the hotel ask for a few recommendations as the bartender might push the hotel restaurant)
and sometimes the dumpiest place can have the greatest food
Example - When in New Orleans I always eat at Coop's. Little dive bar on Decatur but the food is made fresh (Gumbo is different every day) and the staff is funny/funky (in a good way) plus they take care of you (Charging me rail price for Red Breast - this trip I drank all the Red Breast they had over 3 visits)
Mmmm food

Hey, now - I've washed plenty of American currency! It's quite spendable after going through several washes and drying cycles :okthumb:
Kleenex, however....not so durable...... :(
American money is supposedly the easiest to counterfeit. In addition, because it's all the same size, it's impossible for those that have vision problems to deal with  And try as we might, we cannot get Americans to go for a coin dollar, and don't even MENTION getting rid of the penny, lol!

Even Mexico's ahead of the game. They issued the first see-through hologrammed bill a few months ago, the 20 peso bill. Looking forward to the rest of them. They're very durable, it's nice that they're washable, though I don't generally put mine in the dishwasher :P
What really rocks about them is that they don't seem to wrinkle up so badly and it's impossible to wad them up so it's easier to close a wallet.
The US definitely needs to change the currency. In low light I've given out 50's for 5's..at least the Mexican bills are different colors AND sizes..so you don't give out a 500 peso bill for a 50. The lower denomination bills are smaller, so you can grab one almost without looking at them. They also have coins up to 20 pesos, which is cool.
CJ - I disagree with you and don't feel I'm clutching at straws
Chris even posted he could have titled the thread differently and that was enough for me to drop the issue

No, the U.S. doesn't need to change it's currency. Ours is a country that places value on education. We teach our children numbers early on so that when they get older they can tell the difference between a 5 and a 50.
However, your post brings up an interesting question: Just what kind of transaction are you engaging in where there is not enough light to see the difference between a 5 and a 50?????????

I absolutely fucking LOVE when canadians start with their "proud to be a canadian" whining.
Canada... You have the PEACE and FREEDOM that you enjoy because WE (read the United States of America) provide that peace and freedom for you. Plain and simple.
If your country was attacked, who would come to your aid? England? Perhaps. France? HAH! We all know the answer to that one. Whoever came to your aid would be doing so BEHIND the U.S. Military.
Now, start up again and we might just have to spank you and send you to bed without supper.

um, do we really need to go here again? to talk about all the times usa HASN'T come to the aid of its foreign friends?!
you continue to spout these sentences without any knowledge of what your country actually *does* in these situations. do you actually believe this line of thinking?!?!?
Canada is a slightly different story, ONLY because if someone was attacking canada it would be because they were on their way to the usa. The only time canada would be attacked is because the usa pissed off someone and canada is close by and an easy way to get to usa. usa's big mouth is what's putting canada in danger in the first place, so I should hope you'd jump in and help.

I would really like to see a bill with a see-through spot in it, that sounds cool. I'm looking forward to colored American money, it's about time our money looked pretty like everyone else's.
CJ with that see-through holographic spot on your bills, does the bill ever "tear" or wear down easily around that spot?
Heather do you mean your 20peso bill is *completely* see-through? Are they kinda stiff like thin plastic?
If they were stiff, they could even be stamped - like a seal - and that would help blind folks differentiate between them as well as adding some cool effects for those with sight.

Why when American's are proud to be American it just is that, but when we're proud to be Canadian we're whining? LOL
Should us poor Canadians living in igloos with our non stop winters long to be Americans? Would that make us worthy?
I normally say nothing when it comes to Americans swinging their balls around about how great they are (I love getting paid is USD btw! LOL) but can't Canadians be PROUD to be Canadians, or should we bow our heads in shame and all apply for green cards?

nah i've never had one tear, you actually have to cut it to get it to break because its plastic ... its incredibly strong ...
i'm just analyzing this note i have here and i dont think it has any kind of 'line' around the clear bit, it looks like its actually melted ... as in, the whole thing is 1 piece of plastic .... not sure how they do it but its pretty cool!

That does look pretty neat! I wonder who came up with the idea of see-through money?
When I was a teenager, I always figured by the year 2000 we'd be walking around with little debit sticks (about the size of the handle of a nail file) and not actually using any currency. With Mexico just changing to a clear bill and the US finally changing to colored, I guess that's a *long* way off. (Although the wide acceptance of the Euro is a good move towards that.)
Hell at this rate everyone else will be a non-cash society and the US will just be switching to clear. :)
that's one of the few downsides of being a part of such a large country ... it takes twice as long for changes to be accepted by everyone
we dropped 1 and 2 cent coins out of our currency almost 10 years ago, and round every up or down to the nearest 5c ... if the u.s. did that it would effect the economy in a much bigger way than our country of 19 million people, so your stuck with the penny for a while i reckon ;-)
although usa leads the way in most computer technology, we've got cell phone technology that's years ahead ... because you can overhaul the entire cell phone network of australia with a roll of wire and some cable ties ... oh, and a ladder. so whenever something new is invented they use australia to experiment
:P
I don't know how true this is, but I hear that the US is getting ready to go through another round of currency changes.
The ONLY difference is that this time they are going to expire all the old bills at a certain date in order to fuck all the cash hording drug dealers and terrorists.
Seems I remember someone telling us all at the beginning of 2002 that the dollar was toast and to buy gold. :bdance:

I would really like to see a bill with a see-through spot in it, that sounds cool. I'm looking forward to colored American money, it's about time our money looked pretty like everyone else's.
CJ with that see-through holographic spot on your bills, does the bill ever "tear" or wear down easily around that spot?
nah i've never had one tear, you actually have to cut it to get it to break because its plastic ... its incredibly strong ...
i'm just analyzing this note i have here and i dont think it has any kind of 'line' around the clear bit, it looks like its actually melted ... as in, the whole thing is 1 piece of plastic .... not sure how they do it but its pretty cool!

Yeah those Aussie dollars are pretty cool - I've got a couple of 5's here and they are definitely interesting. We picked some up at an Internext a few years back - hubby was "bartending" (translation: pouring one drink for a webmaster and then one for himself - lol) at a hospitality suite and everyone all of a sudden started tipping. We got some interesting coins and a few Aussie bills to take home and show the kids.
And you're right...that clear spot is like it's all melted into the bill...totally impossible to tear - like it's all one piece. :)
