From ... http://www.theposition.com/takingpositions...rn/default.shtm (http://www.theposition.com/takingpositions/provocateur/01/03/05/porn/default.shtm)

The porno party of the Clinton years is ending and pornographers may be putting the sacrosanct "money shot" out to pasture. George W. Bush is sending out signals that battling pornography will be a key objective of his administration. After Bush's appointment of John Ashcroft, who had a history of prosecuting porn when he was Missouri Attorney General, porn industry insiders fear Bush is looking to appoint long-term anti-porn advocate, Bruce A Taylor, president of the National Law Center for Children and Families (NLC), to be Ashcroft's deputy Porn Czar. According to Inside.com, two other anti-porn warriors Bush is looking at for the post are Patrick Truman with the American Family Association, and J. Robert Flores of the NLC. ....

----------

Say Ashcroft and Taylor go after porn ..

What legislation would be effective? Would the Supreme Court nix anything like they did with CDA? Would the ACLU wield their hammers once again?

Is it technologically feasible?

Would the strongest still survive?

Would legislation be more user-end or distributer-ended and if distributor-ended, what could they do to stop one from setting up shop in Country X?

1. What is the worst that could happen?
2. What is the most likely thing that could happen? (Nothing, something, or everything) ?

they can't stop porn as much as they can't stop drugs..

as long as there is a DEMAND,
there is always going to be supply.

I really do not see any major crack down on mainstream porn. The cat is out of the bag, and will never be put back in. Not only that, but I think the public would be very mad at any administation cracking down on mainstream porn by federal authorities when there are thousdands of people hell bent on blowing up building and people in this country. This is where most people want the feds to be working on.

Now, I think the feds should, and might come down on the really illegal stuff - kiddie, and beasty porn are RAMPENT. It would take a task force of a hundred agents YEARS just to bust all of these scumbags....

When I refer to mainstream porn, I am refering to what most of us do, boy-girl, hardcore, etc..... some of the stuff that is out there might have some issues.... the harsh treatment of girls by idiots like max hardcore and such might raise some flags as well.

My prediction (based on how similar things have gone in the past) is that mainstream online porn will be the FIRST target, because it is the easiest, most visible target. The little guys will be the first ones busted.

That is the way the feds have worked in the past and I see no reason for it to change in the future.....

Sarattah, I agree if it happens the feds will bust some of the smaller people first - because they are the ones who can least afford to defend themselves. They cannot hire big time lawyers.

Also from what I have read about porn prosecutions, the federal gov't lost them most of the time, at least the criminal cases - however during the year or 2 the trial went on they bankrupted the porn companies, by freezing their assets, and shutting them down temporarily.

I think the feds are smart, they will go after some very obvious people, who they think would be slam dunk cases.

The cockholsters are doing a pretty good job at burning all our bridges as well.

We've done an incredibly poor job at policing ourselves, not saying this government would have had any different attitude towards us but the online porn industry has done nothing but spit in the face of VISA and the government.

Washington have made a national ban on alcohol in the past - yes I know it was 80 years ago, but still shows how politicians think. Try and ban alcohol today, and see how long the politicians will stay in power...

When politicians sees a problem, then they make laws - its easy to write something down on paper etc. but the battle will be impossible for them to win.

But do not worry, if Washington do ban porn, then I will head for LA, and begin my new life as porno gangster, and take my place in underworld history beside Al Capone, smuggling porn into computers across the US...

Mutt,

What could we do to "police ourselves" better?

Mike,

You're saying they will go after some very obvious ILLEGAL sites, correct?

Some of the folks that Bush needs to keep firmly behind him are the people who hope Rev. Falwell had his fingers crossed when he apologized for saying America brought 9/11 on itself because of abortion, ho-mo-sexuls, etc. Some of those people will tell you that porn is as big a problem as terrorism. He "owes" them some porn busts, and I suspect he will deliver in the 2nd or 3rd quarter next year, if not before.

(This is getting scary :D, but) I agree with Mike when he saysSarattah, I agree if it happens the feds will bust some of the smaller people first - because they are the ones who can least afford to defend themselves. They cannot hire big time lawyers.

It's possible that Ashcroft will got after somebody big, however. As AG in Missouri, when ideology and politics intersected Ashcroft never hesitated to go to court and do battle knowing fully well that he didn't stand a chance of winning.

It could be a good thing - just think if we could put the hardcore-loving TGPs back into Pandora's box.
Probably never happen, but hey - if you're going to go worse-case scenario, may as well go best-case scenario as well!

Forcing all hardcore and 'money shots' back behind AVS entries or member's areas... ahhh, that would be nice for the bottom line.
