This article cracked me up. Even chopped up fried potatos are offended to be called "french" :D :D

Fried politics: Restaurant serves 'freedom fries'
Wednesday, February 19, 2003

BEAUFORT, North Carolina (AP) -- You can get fries with your burger at a restaurant here, but just don't ask for french fries.

Neal Rowland, the owner of Cubbie's, now only sells his fried potato strips as "freedom fries" -- a decision that comes as Americans watch French officials back away from support for possible war in Iraq.

"Because of Cubbie's support for our troops, we no longer serve french fries. We now serve freedom fries," says a sign in the restaurant's window.

Rowland said his intent is not to slight the French people, but to take a patriotic stance to show his support for the United States and the actions of President Bush.

"It's our way of showing our patriotic pride," he said, noting that his business has a lot of local military troops as customers.

Rowland said the switch from french fries to freedom fries came to mind after a conversation about World War I when anti-German sentiment prompted Americans to rename German foods like sauerkraut and hamburger to liberty cabbage and liberty steak.

Interesting...it's a nice sentiment - and it probably hasn't hurt business any - especially with all that military in town.

People come up with some interesting ideas....

I was talking about this with another mom @ my son's baseball practice last night and another mom behind me spoke up talking about all the prejudices she's already seeing because she's French Canadian. People hear the French accent or hear her kids speak in French and they make some really nasty comments.

Just wondering if we have any folks here who are French Canadian - or French for that matter - that are seeing any negativity already? I felt sorry for this family - she says she's thinking of pulling the kids out of school for awhile and doing home study because of all the teasing they've been getting. She's even considering ordering groceries online for delivery because most of the nasty comments have been in the check-out lane when people hear her talk.

And yes - she's stated the obvious - that's she's French Canadian, not French - but then they start harping in on all the Canadians that have recently moved to our valley. It's not as bad as being French - she said - but it just keeps the negative comments flowing in a different way.

:(

I can certainly disagree with someone's politics, but taking it out on an entire group of people that have nothing to do with it is unfair.

Try to remember what we did to the Japanese-Americans in WWII..shameful.

I liked the SNL skit where Charlize Theron stated that since she was born in Africa, and currently living in America, she was African-American :awinky:

Exactly...that's what I kept thinking about. I mean - if she's thinking of taking such drastic measures to keep her family away from the public - how awful. The irony is that the family moved here FOR the kids - they were looking for a better school system and community involvement.

This sucks. :grrr:

Peaches,

I'm also Italian American.

So all in all, I'm Italian French Canadian American. Oh, yeah, I have the now popular and customary Native American in the old bloodline, so I'm " Italian French Canadian Native American",
I've decided to shorten it all to "American". Whatcha think?

I'm English-German-Scottish-Irish-Dutch so I shorten it to "Really, really white WASPY honky cracker chick that should probably still be on the other side of the Pond" :okthumb:
