Serge that is good, Hard work is good for the soul!!
I have been in Tampa for 3 days in my new house.... Katie and I have been working out asses off trying to get it orginized somehow.
OUr biggest need right now is furniture. First day we came in we got some mattresses.... very comfortable. Then of course went and ordered some electronics - I need my TV and such. Still waiting for it to be devivered....
We have a small sofa, and a small chair as the only furniture in the house, we brought that with us from NO. So far teh furniture stores here have sucked, maybe I am looking in wrong areas.
For my office I bought a folding table, and a chair - going back to OLD SCHOOL - that is how I started HiRise upstair at my moms house.... for a computer I have my tiny Sony, on dialup.... should get Cable tuesday.
So overall things are going well.... but its been a tough 3 days.
On top of it, I get to "Sunny" Florida, and it has been raining the past 2 days or so...
Anyone in Tampa area?? I could use some tips and pointers!!

Michael left NO? I never thought I'd see the day! Mike, Sharky lives in Tampa, hit him up on icq!
Also, there's always online shopping! Ask Miss Eve for the URLS of all the online furniture stores, I'm quite sure she knows them, we were talking about that once. At least you can look up what you like and then find the local stores in your area that carry them. Drexel-Heritage is online, so are Thomasville and Ethan Allen.
Too bad you're on the other side of the country, I have a storage space full of brand new semi-pro kitchen appliances that won't fit in my kitchen here.
6 burner Viking dual-fuel Range, Viking 30 inch wall oven, 30 cuft. Sub-Zero fridge, two Sub-Zero refrigerator produce drawers, a Viking down-draft exhaust system and an Asko dishwasher..just the freight to Tampa would kill ya :P
Anyone building a house on the west coast..hit me up, I want to stop paying storage on these things. Wish I had the 25K to remodel my kitchen, but oh well, that went bye-bye with my WTS account.

Heather, I am no leaving NO.... I have all my property, and everythign there. I will just be traveling back and forth to Tampa.... So I figured might as well get a house, especially since interest rates were so low.
That is the issue, if I was moving, I have TONS of furniture - suff I like, and lots of antiques.... but since I am leaving it behind I am starting from scratch. Which is a pain in the butt....
Those appliances sound nice.... someone should jump on them!
As far as Sharky, I am in touch with him all the time... he is the one who showed me the subdivision I bought my house in.... OF course when we first went the snobby lady bascily told me I could not affod ot live there... haha Luckily Sharky introduced me to a GREAT real estate agent....
I am off to go search for some furniture... I think looking in person is better then online... I need to be able to jump on it, lay on it, and such to get a good feel for it!

WTF??
Tampa?? Why did you choose Tampa for a second home? And don't tell me all of a sudden you're gonna jump on the Bucs bandwagon now that they won the Super Bowl!!

Michael, granted, my taste run traditional, but I found what I liked at the smaller "1 store" type places. The craftsmanship and customer service tends to be a LOT better and they can usually custom make something if you have an odd request- like if you need a pink leather sofa:
http://www.onlinebeach.com/den2.jpg
:awinky:
I also have very inexpensive tastes - I know most of what I get is going to be ruined in a few years by me, the dogs, the kid, and friends with drinks and food, so I take that into consideration and realize that spending more than $800 for a chair doesn't make much sense. Plus I know I'll get bored with everything in a few years and want to redo it all :agrin:

That's why I liked my chocolate brown sectional sofa, circa 1975 ... the damn thing was virtually indestructable, and lived through all kinds of dogs, cats, children, parties of all kinds ... I only kept it until 1990 (and one daughter still has the two ottomans - put together they make a great guest bed for friends of my grandson).
If that damn thing could talk, I'd be set for story content well into the next millenium ... :D

Last year we finally retired my Dad's sectional he bought in 1980 :( It was huge and it was the focal point of his "bachelor pad" for many years. It was larger and more comfortable than a king bed! The funny thing was that out of around 12 pieces, my Dad only sat on 1, so only that one showed any signs of "smush". If someone could have found room to store it, we would have. It was da bomb :rokk:
Another good furniture story - my mother has all her furniture hand made and she babies it. You walk into her house and swear everything's brand new. When my son was teething, we looked over and he was sitting there scraping his upper and lower teeth across one of her coffee tables :agrin: She said at that point she realized the "true meaning of Grandmotherly love meant that she didn't kill him". That was 19 years ago and those scratches are STILL there and are STILL the only scratches she has on any of her furniture. :biglaugh:

Well, there's a light switch, 2 smoke alarms (I don't know why there are two....), alarm touch pad and thermostat. :agrin:
But these are probably what you're asking about:
http://www.finster.com
I collect his stuff - I love bright, tacky folkart- but I hate how they're organized (and the fact that there are 2 smoke alarms.....), so when I paint that wall, it's going to be redone - they'll be removed and put elsewhere - more than likely near some of his other bright, tacky folkart :bjump:
In looking the website, it seems they've sold all Howard's art since he died and they're just selling his daughter and grandson's originals. Ebay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=finster) and private sales are the only places to get his stuff now - though I saw a wood Coke cut out for $4K the other day in a private store! :zoinks:

TE - do not worry, I am no Bucs fan. I used to like them, but once they were moved in the same division as the Saints, I had to hate them. Hell the Saints OWN the Bucs... too bad they cannot beat anyone else.
I used to have a condo in Tampa a few years back, so Tampa is not really new to me as a second home. This time, I set up in a house http://michaelandkatie.us/tampa Just searching for furniture... and guys, I think you can imagine the torture it is for me....
I just want something comfortable, and functional. We only want to knock out a few rooms at a time... I personally prefer antiques... need to find some antique places up here.
Peaches, small places are good - we have resigned ourselves that we will have to custom order our furniture - so we will be 6-8 weeks waiting...
Nothing like watching a 57 inch Sony HDTV on folding chairs!

BEAUTIFUL Michael and Katie! :inlove: (and Mom and Dad looked quite comfy there, too :awinky: )
Just have a big housewarming party where each guest must bring an item of furniture!
(edit because I need to type slower!)

Peaches that is a good idea, because if we had a house warming now, people would have to sit on the floor.
We will definately have some kind of house warming out here, probably in Spring some time.... April or May.... we should have the house somewhat set up by then.
Yeah my parents liked the house, if I decide to stay in Tampa full time, they are already talking about moving here too. Which would be great.... Tampa is a nice area, and is pretty inexpensive place to live....
Though if I moved here full time, I would want to move to another house... something on the Gulf ( I love saltwater ) or on a lot of land like my house in New Orleans.
I like the house in Tampa, but the main reason I bought this one is its in a gated community that is real strict - so if I am not here for 2 months or if Katie is here alone for a few days, I do not have to worry about anything bad happening.

So.....can I have the house in NO??!! Can I, can I, can I, huh? :bjump: I'll feed it, and take care of it, and make sure it gets painted and mowed....but I need those ugly pig things all dead first - my little pugs wouldn't fare so well in a battle against them :(
Tampa is beautiful. If I had to have 2 houses, I'd have one in somewhere in Montana/Idaho/Wyoming and something like Tampa - somewhere for the wide open area, then somewhere I could go to thaw out. :okthumb:
Living on the bay is nice, but having the waterway is cool because you can just hop on the boat and take off! Plus, saltwater is MURDER on houses and cars. It's better to have a FRIEND that lives on the bay.

Billy - Grill is indeed ready. Had the gas guy come and get everything set up.
Peaches - part of the reason I moved to Tampa was business... Though it would be in my top 5 places to live in the US right now. New Orleans is a great place to visit, one of the best in the world - but its not best to live. The state and city are hampered by corruption, and hence is very backwards.... and things probably will not be changing anytime soon.
It is still HOME for me, and is a vital part of who I am....
As far as my place in NO, I need someone to house sit for long stretchs at time.... You would have to also puppy sit.
Beautiful house Mike and Katie! Love the covered pool...I need one of those...my pool gets so full of leaves all the time it's crazy....and far too much work than I'm willing to do.

Very Beautiful Home
Unsure of your taste in decor but http://www.designtoscano.com has very nice pieces
Swan Fainting Couch (http://www.designtoscano.com/jump.jsp?itemID=879&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C58%2C60) is beautiful and comes in left or right
and Nettlestone Library Ensemble (http://www.designtoscano.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=1534&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=Nettlestone) is another great piece, you should see it closed as well as opened. It resembles a book shelf when closed

MikeAI - Congrats on the new house .. looks amazing!! .. and we have the EXACT same shaped pool and spa .. what a coincidence!
Michael, if you're not looking to break the bank and get the furniture in a decent amount of time, try the local Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware and Z Gallerie -- lots of antique looks without the antique prices -- most stuff if you'll take stock fabrics can be to you in ten days or less.
Frankly I'd stay away from Thomasville, Drexel and Ethan Allen --ever since they put Minimum Retail Pricing into effect a few years ago the prices are ridiculously high for what you get from them any more... quality over the years has dropped considerably at all of them as they became pieces of manufacturing conglomerates instead of singly owned manufacturers.
Lexington still has some good value to it, and lots of neat groups -- you should be able to find it pretty readily in the area. They've got collections designed by Bob Timberlake, Arnold Palmer, Southern Living, Nautica, Tommy Bahama and more --
I know there are Haverty's down there, once again if you want to overpay, head right on over to them.
Kanes is also down there but I haven't seen their prices lately -- also a couple Robbed and Stuck its (Robb & Stuckey pricing...) -- should be Hudsons and maybe Klaussens down there as well --

Ah - fell in love with some of their stuff! :inlove: Unfortunately, most of their pieces were too "big" size wise for what I needed. This place is just too small. :(
Maybe when I redo everything in a couple of years and decide to only have 2 pieces in each room :awinky:
