No offense, I don't even know you,

always a good idea to find out who your being a smartass to BEFORE your a smartass

:awinky:

Colin is actually one of those really violent people ... he always beats someone up at internext and last time he put the guy in hospital ;-/
he looks really mean too ... tattoos all over, bald with a goatie, and part black ...

be careful plugger, i'd hate to see you get hurt

:P

Cj,

You're right, I will probably get into some trouble because I just call 'em as I see 'em.

When I see things like "We are looking for a hobbyist that loves to program", I read that as "We don't want to pay you the $100/hour your worth".

Now, I do not know Colin, he may be a great guy, that is why I prefaced my post with the "No offense" deal. When I get to know him better I will be more straight forward. At this point I want to be at least halfway respectful. It is a hard line to walk. What I really want to say is "Dude? Do you want a fucking programer or a fucking hobbyist? Programmers make money, hobbyist collect coins!". That is what I would say to someone I knew better . . .

plugger, can I ask you .... have you ever employed a programmer?

Cj,

You're right, I will probably get into some trouble because I just call 'em as I see 'em.

i've never understood why anyone uses this as a character advantage or mentions it as a 'personal quality' ... if you DIDN'T 'call it as you see it' it would make you a liar/fraud/weak .... or as we say in oz, a big fucking pussy

so all you really said there is 'i'm not a big fucking pussy'

When I see things like "We are looking for a hobbyist that loves to program", I read that as "We don't want to pay you the $100/hour your worth".

'hobbiest' is a way of saying 'we want someone who really loves what they do' ... why? the best programmers (or employees of any kind for that matter) are the ones who love their job to the point that they still do it even outside of work hours ... in the end, most hobbyists can end up being paid a lot more due to their level of commitment.

my programmer is a hobbyist, he fucking rocks. he can build anything i ask him to ... why? because he loves finding out how ....

well, your first post was patronizing and condescending .... and now you say you wanted to be halfway respectful?

too late ;-)

Plugger, anyone that starts a sentence with "no offense' probably means some.

Cj hit it RIGHT ON THE HEAD. Every word. All of it. I can't do any better and leave it at that.

.NET eh?

My cup of tea :)

VBasic.NET (http://VBasic.NET)

I prefer VB.NET over C# but to each his own.

They both can do the same exact thing becuase they both access the same Common Language Runtime....so its basically your coding preference.

Anyway, its cool you're looking for a .NET programmer.

VBasic.NET (http://VBasic.NET) - My hobby site :)

Yes, I have. I have 2 working for us right now, one predominately in C and the other in PHP/MySQL. I also do alot of programming myself.

Eric,

I love programming too. I only know perl though and no expert at all. I create models/simulations of all kinds of whacked out things such as simulating the Oprano football pool or modeling various aspects of ideal economies and seeing what kind of income distributions appear.

I chose perl because it's quick and dirty.

$100 per hour? Damn, I can get a whole fleet of programmers in India for that and they meet and exceed deadlines...
I'm to the point of giving up on "programmers" and just grabbing a couple college kids out of India....

Am I the only one who's had problems getting things done with "programmers"? Everyone knows I'm the worst at hitting deadlines, but it's because of my extremely adening dependence upon "programmers"...if only I had become one....

note, this wasn't directed at Plugger, just venting my feelings on programmers in general...and yes, I've been dealing with "real" programmers and not just "hobbyists"

...and if I can find that rare programmer that can enable me to smash someone in the face with a brick via computer, I'll sign over what's left of my blackened soul..........

When I did consulting my rate was $1250/day plus expenses. I was booked for months in advance because I got things done ahead of schedule and delivered what the client wanted. Now I find myself employing programmers and I can understand why good ones get top dollar. Most of the ones I have dealt with lately have zero personality, want to do everything their way (not the way I want it done), don't have a clue how to write modular code, work when they feel like it, disappear for weeks at a time, and are for the most part very unprofessional. My last project the programmer promised delivery in a week. 2 months later a got a pile of crap that was so cludgy it was rediculous and it didn't do 3/4 of the things I put in the spec. I ended up firing the guy and writing it myself. Having been a programmer/analyst for nearly 20 years it is embarrassing how unprofessional many of my colleagues are.

Programmers are odd balls. In the past 6 years I’ve dealt with so many damn flaky ass programmers I can chew my tongue. It doesn’t matter what you pay them. If you do find a good one he’s book no matter his price.

In this industry it’s all about performance. I can hire designer dirt cheap & they may even be good but then I’ve got to baby-sit his ass and play hurry up and wait. Often I’ll pay more to have less hassle.

I’d love to find a programmer that does the job and finishes it without a fucking hassle.

Colin are you hiring someone full time?
