01-22-2003, 08:05 AM
Issued at: 5:30 AM EST 1/22/03, expires at: 5:00 PM EST 1/22/03
A freeze watch for interior and inland metro areas Friday morning, A very strong cold front will
move across south Florida Thursday ahead of an arctic high pressure system building into the south
us. This will likely result in the coldest temperatures so far this winter season, and the coldest
since the freeze situation of january 5 2001. The lowest temperatures Friday morning will possibly
be in the 20s over the interior portions of south Florida. Temperatures may dip into the mid 20s
in the colder locations such as immokalee, moore haven, labelle, palmdale, clewiston, and belle
glade. Elsewhere temperatures may range from near 30 degrees over a large portion of interior south
Florida including the redlands in miami-dade county. The lower to mid 30s will occur in the naples
and west palm beach areas to around 40 degrees in the fort lauderdale and miami metro areas. This
would be about 3 to 6 degrees colder than this past weekend. Temperatures could be below freezing
for sev!
eral hours over the interior locations on Thursday and Friday night. In addition, gusty
northwesterly winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected thursday night and early Friday morning after the passage
of the cold front. This will result in wind chills late Thursday night into early Friday morning
dropping as low as the teens over parts of northern interior south Florida, to around 30 in the
metro areas of south Florida. A wind chill advisory will likely be needed over all of south Florida
Thursday night and Friday morning. The winds will decrease Friday night which will result in good
radiational cooling, where temperatures can fall again to near or below freezing for interior south
Florida. At this time, a significant warmup is not expected until Sunday. Since this arctic blast
looks even colder than last weekend, persons with agricultural interests should begin preparing
now to take protective action for Thursday, Friday, and possibly even Saturday nights. Residents of
south Flo!
rida should stay tuned to noaa weather radio or other media for updates on this potential freeze
situation. Additional information and detailed graphics can be found on the national weather
service web site at http://treets.nbc6.net/svc/lnk.cfm?l=16853014&t=1.

Glad I moved South from Orlando. 26 expected there tomorrow.

I remember when my family moved to Florida in January, 1977. It snowed in Orlando. It snowed in Miami then too.

This is certainly not what I moved to Naples for..... BUT, this is a piece of cake on what can be expected in the North on Thursday with temperatures ranging from a high of 10 degrees to 0.

I will just put on my jeans and sweatshirt, maybe go down to the health club and spend some time in the steam room, and jaccuzzi. That sounds like a plan. :redance: :redance:

I just came back from Upstate NY last week and froze my ass off. I left Florida, bought a home in the Adirondacks. It was cool seeing the seasons change and I had never lived in snow.

One winter I watched the temp gauge on my SVU go backwards down to like -20 and I freaked out! After 4 years the novelity of winter wore off.

Even though I was coming to Florida in the winter I decided it wasn't enough. I'd rather take August and go up north. My sister has a place in sag Harbor so I'd go spend August there.

One adjusts. I was born in North Dakota. Pretty cold there. Also lived in Syracuse, the snowiest metropolitan area in the United States averaging 115 inches of snow a year. I lived there in 1992 when after 162 inches of snow had already fallen the city council whimsically declared hat any more snow that year would be illegal. Of course, it snowed some more. Mother Nature, never to be upstaged and in an act of probable vengeance then dumped 192 inches of snow on the city the next year.

Now you all understand why I moved to Florida. I am a true Southerner now and anything below 50 degreed feels arctic.

I'm heading to Syracuse to visit this weekend. Brrrrr.

Yeah, it's funny to watch all them southerners suffering when it gets near freezing... not ready for it, I guess.

Suppose to warm up a bit overnight, maybe only -30 with the wind tomorrow. :-)

The best way to explain the cold is this: I drive a Golf Diesel (at near $4cdn for a gallon of gas, there is some practical to be had in this). I went out last night, picked up some things, and grabbed a coffee on the way around. I decide to pull over and enjoy the coffee for a few minutes.

I sat in the car, with the engine running, and watched the temperature guage slowly drop down to cold again in about 10 minutes - and it was still running!

That's cold. :-)

One of the things I miss about living in San Jose, California is that it's about a 4 hour drive to the ski resorts. All the winter sports you want and you didn't have to put up with it the rest of the time.
