View Full Version : Remember When?
When I was a kid adults used to bore me to tears
with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they
were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every
morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their
younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they
maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job
at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to
help keep their family from starving to death!
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way
in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how
hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But....
Now that I've reached the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but
look around and notice the youth of today.
You've got it so f*ckin' easy!
I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a goddamned Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good
you've got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet--we wanted to
know something, we had to go to the goddamned library and look it up
ourselves!
And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a
letter--with a pen!--and then you had to walk all the way across the
street and put it in the f*ckin' mailbox and it would take like a week to get
there!
And there were no MP3s or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you
had to go to the goddamned record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or we had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ
would usually talk over some part of it and f*ck it all up!
You want to hear about hardship?
You couldn't just download p*rn! You had to bribe some homeless dude
to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! It was either that or
jack-off to the lingerie section of the JC Penney catalog!
Those were your options!
We didn't have fancy sh*t like Call Waiting! If you were on the
phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was it could be your
boss, your mom, a collections agent, your drug dealer, you didn't
know!!!
You just had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
And we didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation videogames with
high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like
"Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked a$$! Your
guy was a little square! You had to use your imagination! And there were
no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you
could never win, the game just kept getting harder and faster until you
died! Just like LIFE!
When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium
seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front of
you, you were screwed!
And sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like
20 channels and there was no onscreen menu! You had
to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!
And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on
Saturday morning... ...D'ya hear what the f*ck I'm saying!?!
We had to wait ALL WEEK, you spoiled little bastards!
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it
too easy.
You're spoiled, I swear to God! You guys wouldn't last five minutes back in 1984!

I remember when my daughter was a few years old, I took her to the physics library at Syracuse University (geek). She said "What's that, daddy?" and pointed at the ancient device we remember as the typewriter.

I rented an appartment in Mayfair in London for a year.
Very nice place,pte elevator v.nice.
I rented it from a member of a famous typewriter manufacturing company. There were antique typewriters under glass domes on display throughout it.Kinda cool.
My neighbours (for the Brits reading were
Paul Gambuchini and David Essex.(again only old brits would know who they are)
On the old front...it is my daughters 10th Birthday today....fuck I'm old.

Serge,
I was going to post when XMSR reversed and did the head-fake but you were in LV. Those can be the strongest moves when they have faked everybody out of their positions and go the other way.
After it started moving more in the last couple days, I was hoping you just wouldn't notice.... hahahaha
Also, is it really 30K or would you have sold early? eh?? eh??
If not..... oops!!!
I'll buy YOU the drink now. Vodka?

There is a zero in my next birthday. There is a 5 in it too. I don't remember Inter Santum on the radio with that squeaky door opening..... but I can remember my grandmother listening to her soap operas on the radio.

not me!!
a life in the aussie sun without a hat and sunscreen has sealed my fate ...
i've always figured facelifts would be a standard operation with a miracle healing cure by the time i need one ;-)))
monk, your post needs to go into the oprano hall of fame ... is there one of those yet?
I find myself thinking many of those things in your post, but i can never bring myself to say them out loud for fear of sounding like my grandmother!!
i always feel old around lisa's kids ... they tell me about cool toys and video games and technology that *I* don't know about, the latest tv show or cartoon ... i have to bribe them with candy and toys so they'll think i'm cool ;-(
does anyone remember fat albert? i used to love that cartoon ... lisa's 3 kids were staying over recently and fat albert came on cable. i demanded it was left on so we could watch it, and i was doing the fat albert voice 'hey hey hey, its fat albert' ... i looked around and all 3 children are staring at me, saying nothing, with horrified looks on their faces. i started explaining bill cosby, the cosby show, etc ... still, blank looks ... when the cartoon started playing, they started chanting 'this is lame' ... i have to admit, i thought it was pretty lame too ... cartoons when we were young DID SUCK!!
so don't worry old farts, us young ones still feel it occasionally too ...
:P

lmao - dead on there Rox...back in our teen years, watching Vince up on stage - did we ever think that some of these old webmasters might have better bodies than rock gods???
*shakes head* Yeah - I think it's seeing the celebs we once thought were such hotties turn into .... such .... old men...
'Stat - Heather is right, you certainly don't act OR look old enough to have lived through any of that stuff. *hugs* Hey - let's get together next week and chat about what shows you're doing this year. I can't make Negril, but let's try to coordinate this. Again - it was great having dinner with you and the whole crew that last night. Really *made* the whole trip for us. :)
*throws an orange back at Bestat*

Some of them have NOT aged gracefully AT all, that's for sure!
However, I saw a show on MTV or VH1 the other night that featured kids of some of my favorite rockers...
Jumpin' Jesus, but the sons of Joe Perry and Dee Snider are freakin' HOT! Their dads never gave me the slipperies back in the day (although I am quite possibly Dee Snider's biggest fan (http://www.cyber-goddess.com/smf/whydee.htm), as most people know LOL), but their sons are heartbreakingly handsome -- and seem to be quite intelligent and good kids.
I almost felt guilty for their effect on me... I am, after all, old enough to be their mother!!!
It's interviews like this that make Dee my hero:
http://www.metal-sludge.com/20QuestionsDeeSnider.htm
I think the best thing about getting up in years is being able to dispense with the mincing of words and trying to self-censor everything so people will either be impressed or feel like they're having their ass kissed. After a certain age, most of us don't give a tinker's damn what other people think of our opinions. That part rules! It's a hell of a lot easier to be ObnoxiousBitch at 40 than it was at 25. What shocked people back then is explained away now by a simple, "Oh, she's just old & crotchety." :rokk:
Here are a couple of shots to make us ALL feel quite good about how far we've traveled and the ravages of time...

Oh, I feel MUCH better now. :D
Actually just got in from the show - 3rd time I've seen Vince Neil in the same small club in the past year - he looks to be in pretty good shape - not as bloated looking as he was
Admittedly it is sad to see a guy who played for packed houses of 15K to 20K every night playing a club with maybe 1,000 people in it, but it a way it is cool - Rock still lives and it's not all SR71 (hometown boy Mitch Allen makes the big time)
Vince Neil said he was just in from Vegas so am guessing he is just getting away from the AVN show
and I'll admit I'll be seeing LA Guns at the same club next month
Like I said - FUCK GETTING OLD
On the subject on rock star offspring hotties ... Liv Tyler :yowsa:
Jani Lane was never attractive - even at the height of the glam fag days
and Sebastian Bach is ... Jesus Christ Superstar (but not a good one according to Serge)
Not stuck in the 80's either - all about the present and future

Hell! I'm 'WAY too old for this thread...I am old enough to remember "...a day which will live in infamy...".
I really don't know how we survived back then.
No welfare
No OSHA
No EPA
No 'Endangered Species'
etc.
Oh, yeah, and no TV.
Sure wish we had an 'old' smiley... :D
Heather - server maintenance was being done last night so my avatar was gone for a while
Have to say I've never had the pleasure of meeting you in person but saw the pics of you from this years convention and thought how much healthier you look as compared to pics of you from other shows - then saw the thread about diets and lifestyle changes
Congrats to you!
and your ad button is hilarious
