View Full Version : Following Serge's Path

Carrie

On Colin Delia's "Building An Empire" page, there's a quote from Serge:
Serge sez ...
Internet porn follows the route phone sex went by.

1) tremendous growth
2) easy entry and everybody making money, REGARDLESS of IQ
3) glut in supply
4) consolidation
5) squeezed phone sex gurus moving to a new pastures - internet.

In another thread presented this week, it looks like Serge thinks we've finally hit the consolidation stage in our "little" internet porn gold rush.

Two questions:
1) How long will the consolidation last before we're down to the 'pure' diehards?
2) Following Serge's path, what's the NEXT pasture?

Carrie,
if I knew "what's next", I'd be "Al Gore" and invent it
;-)))

Consolidation stage can last a few years.

Meanwhile...regardless of the numbers of car manufacturers in USA,
there are plenty of people making money in changing oil, tires, gasoline, etc...

RawAlex, thanks for this analogy
;-))

Nice analogy from Alex. People still make a living from making porn movies (DVD, VHS, hotels), magazines, and phone sex. Easy money appeared when a new means of distribution appeared.

When the next porn medium appears, follow the Botto's and the Levi's to success.

Another interesting story. My grandfather tells me that when the automobile first started to become popular, many people opposed it fearing that it would put all the people that took care of the horses out of business. Of course, we know the ending. Many more jobs were created than lost.

a lot of things are changing very fast.

spam is getting harder and harder
tgp's convert worse and worse
free hosting is less and less profitable
processing is more expensive
member retention is less and less.

there are a lot of factors still present to some extent that still allow bozos to succeed "regardless of I.Q." . i dont really think a lot will change in terms of the total volume of paysites, total volume of free content etc that will help anyone be more profitable.

business is business. this business is just becoming like any other business in the world. it is maturing and the people who are really poor businessmen will not succeed or will succeed less and less. i think it is really erroneous to point out certain declines and certain areas and make blanket statements about the industry in general and its future. in the middle of the constant whining and complaining, there have been some amazing success stories this year as well.... Bangbus, Lightspeed etc. there are many.

there IS ALWAYS ROOM for someone to work harder, work better, work better, work smarter, market themselves better, innovate, create, experiment and stay ahead of the curve.

"Whats the next pasture"?

who knows. why is it reasonable to assume or hope that there will be another pasture? surfers are smarter, the dot com era of "irrational exhuberance" (as Greenspan put it) is over. The dust has settled. Now its time to really focus on what works, on the basics and on understanding why some people like Alscans can make so much money with so little content and never so much as change the same shitty design in 4 years and people elsewhere are crying that the sky is falling though they have more cash, traffic and resources.

personally, i have never been more optimistic. for each person that complains about things getting worse, i see opportunity.

No, we find out what the surfer wants and give it to him.

What kind of business plan is that? I am going to find what customers/surfers want - then give it away in huge amounts. I am going to convince surfers they can get everything free on the net. And if they do join a site, I will send them to another company who will bang their credit card $120 a month for the rest of their lives. I may even teach them how to charge back as well.

Fucking eureka!!!

I'm going to open a site with pictures of shoes...then charge $39.95 per month (plus recurring) for more pictures of those shoes and a couple lucky winners will actually win a date with the shoes pictured!!

I won't even have to spend much on advertising...I'll just post a few times and maybe buy an ad spot on a board or two.......

have you never been in a situation where you have the perfect outfit and not 1 single shoe that sets it off??!?!?!

odd shoe fact

the guys that sold linkexchange.com to microsoft for $300 million back in the day. They later bought drugs.com domain for $800k and than dumped it at a loss. They run one of the largest online shoe stores zappos.com

From what i can tell, their site is very popular.
You can even read the feedback from all the shoeholics

The next big thing will be content on multiple platforms/medias/devices working as one unity... The internet will still be used to transport this content, but they way you overall interact with the content will be much different than today... there will be a new era for content producers, marketing wizards etc. much like in 1996-1997, however this time "the price to enter" will be alot higher.

Consolidation - its going to happen and have probably already been going on for more than a year or so... we will have even less people working with adult sites at the end of 2003, while some companies will have grown alot bigger in numbers like traffic..
