View Full Version : Which Men And Women Do You Admire The Most?

The Gallup Organization has completed their annual poll of America's most admired men and women.

The question they were asked was: What man/woman that you have heard or read about, living today in any part of the world, do you admire most? And who is your second choice?

The results were are follows.

Most admired men:

George W. Bush
Jimmy Carter
Colin Powell
Pope John Paul II
Bill Clinton
Billy Graham
Nelson Mandela
Al Gore
Ronald Reagan
Denzel Washington

Most admired women:

Hillary Clinton
Oprah Winfrey
Laura Bush
Barbara Bush
Margaret Thatcher
Jennifer Lopez
Elizabeth Dole
Condoleezza Rice
Maya Angelou
Madeleine Albright

I guess staying with that selection of names the man I most admire is Jimmy Carter. My grandfather met him a number of times when he was working in politics and spoke very highly of him. He always said he was too good a man to be president. Having not met him myself I don't know but he has done a heck of a lot of good since leaving office. Mandela is second for me out of the men but it is darn close.

I have a harder time with the women. I love Maya Angelou. I am a wanna be writer and she just leaves me in awe when I read her stuff. This is especially with 'I rise'. Madeline Albright also gets on my list. Maggie Thather most certainly does not.

What do you think, who isn't there that you would have put on the list and who shouldn't be there?

Alex,

Sarah loves the Oprano community and is doing her part to enhance the quality of posts on this system..
:D

Sarah,

I will take Clinton, but Carter has done a wonderful job since leaving the white house:)

thanks Alex. It comes from having a journalist as a hubby. We have the news wires running across the top of our computers.

Actually I really do like Oprano. I don't know why it took me so long to find the place. I guess you get stuck in your routines.

Maybe not the million posts a day of other boards but genrally a good atmosphere and people actually talk about topics. Thumbs up from me.

Todd..glad someone else thinks Clinton is a hero. I 'saw the light' when I moved to the UK and saw, through the eyes of a non-American, what he did for the world as a whole.

I admire 4 of those men and 5 of those women. I feel guilty including JLo in those 5 but she is incredibly successful in two entertainent fields. She's like the Deion Sanders/Bo Jackson of entertainment.

The one man I really admire is Martin Luthur King, even though he was a smuck of sorts he was a brave man and created many changes for us.

Hillary Clinton is an amazing woman and I wish she'd run for president.

I admire Alex for admiring Sarah :)

Colin,

Your admiration of Jlo is in no way influenced by that fine ass I assume :)

Most Admired Man:
Ronald Reagan

Most Admired Woman:
My Wife

Serge ,not that your wife is no doubt very admirable, (plus she is no dount smart enough to see through your obvious kissing up) but Reagan's political wife would have been Maggie Thatcher , IMHO the best peacetime PM of GB in 100 yrs.

Man:
Jimmy Carter. Having worked with Habitat For Humanity, a great, highly underrated organization, I got to meet him at one time and it was great to see this guy out there at 6am with everyone else, hammer in hand, ready to pitch in and help. Here's a guy who's more than just pointless windbag rhetoric and posturing, here is someone who actually puts things into motion and then sees them through, not just play lip service to them.

Woman:
Madonna. While I'm not a fan of her music, the power she weilds in the music industry is unheard of for a female. She took Maverick Records and it's spinoffs and made them all highly successful. Her movie choices haven't been the best, but she is an amazing business person. She catches flack for being "a slut" but you don't accomplish what she did just by being a slut, you have to have a set of balls too. Here is a woman who, both as an artist and businesswoman, constantly adapts and re-invents herself, never getting stale.

Bertrand Russell
Mark Twain
John Entwistle
Donatien Alphonse Francois DeSade (Ya' I know strange person to admire)
Nickola Tesla
Timothy Leary
Philip K. Dick
Robert G Ingersol
Thomas Paine
etc....

I know it is a strage list and there are no females on the list (But hey it's my list!)

The reason Mother Theresa isn't on the list is the same reason Ghandi aint on it!!!!

Mother Theresa is going to be a saint and Ghandi died rather than be the 'cause of harm to others, the best of the best of humanity.

As you can tell by my list that aint necessarily my catagory.

Hey only a couple of the people on my list were insane  Hahahahaha

Jimmy Carter was probably the WORST president in US history. At least he found his true calling was pounding nails. I admire a man that knows his limitations and makes the most out of what he has to offer. Thankfully he won't be negotiating anymore nuclear treaties with North Korea for at least a couple more years. His last one would be hard to top.

Hillary Clinton as most admired woman? Give me a break, who did they survery? My husband is banging everything in sight but I can get more power because I can hold it over his head. That's warped thinking as far as I'm concerned.

wrong...
his foundation does more than pound nails....he helps poor people build homes (in which they also have a hand in building them) and he's done a lot more than most will EVER do in their lives...god forbid anyone should do anything to help out their fellow man...I thought that's what all the right-wing bible thumpers were all about?

His only mistake as president was thinking that a nice guy could accomplish anything...to be president you have to be a hard driving scheming coldhearted bastard......being a nice guy gets you nothing...same with business...there is no room for nice guys...

But, I guess Nancy Reagan was a pretty good president now that I think about it...my favorite was her "Just Say No To Drugs" platform...I did more drugs after that than before....she kept reminding me to do drugs...as a dealer at the time, I sold more too, so yeah, thank you president Reagan, you helped triple my business...

(for the ultrasexy feds who monitor this board: I'm reformed, I've found Jesus and I think Ashcroft is a pretty swell guy)

Sykkboy, I agree with most of your points. I don't like to write novels when I make posts. My point was that Carter was a disaster as president and as a "diplomat". You can't be a "nice guy" and deal with the Saddam Hussein's and Kim Jong Il's of the world. They look you in the eye, make you a promise that they have no intention of keeping, and then continue on their merry way. Carter expected everyone to have the same morals he does. BIG MISTAKE.

For the record, I think habitat for humanity is a great program because it gives people a chance to own homes in decent neighborhoods that otherwise could not. It also makes them accountable and it's not a handout but rather a handup.

I've never done dope or sold it so I'll take your word on Nancy.

One other thing, don't ever call me a bible thumper again.

I didn't call you a bible thumper, but the right is very full of them, hence my statement about them...

Wow, I was a it snippy last night :)

Ulfie, sorry about the explosion, I just hold Habitat For Humanity and Jimmy Carter for founding it, in high esteem. I've put in countless hours with the program and worked alongside others who selflessly put in long hours just to help people out. In this day and age of "mine, mine, mine" it's refreshing to see a program where people can help themselves out and get some help in the process. It's a program I hold very sacred....

To show I'm not a total asshole, I'll let you pay for the golf and beers in Las Vegas ;)))
