Sean Penn condemns US threats against Iraq
Baghdad, Dec 16, INA
The American movie star, Sean Penn has condemned the US-British threats to wage war against Iraq.

He told press conference that there is no legitimate justification for the brutal campaign against an authentic state like Iraq.

He confirmed that Iraq is completely clear of weapons of mass destruction and the United Nations must adopt a positive stance towards Iraq.

He also condemned the US misleading claims arguing that it is the US and not Iraq who is practicing such illegal behavior.

Mr. Penn went on saying that he would convey to the public opinion in US the real situation that the Americans should force the US administration to stop such aggressive campaign.

Finally, Mr. Penn passed a written communiqué in which he declared that his visit to Iraq is to evaluate the humanitarian situation of Iraqis and to reject the crippling sanctions on Iraq since 1991.

It's nice to see that he is so technically proficient that he can declare the whole country free of "weapons of mass destruction" in his first 48 hours there........

Why do actors think their opinions matter to anyone besides themselves?

If Sean Penn is so concerned with Iraq he can stay there and the US can keep the sanctions

there's a trade for ya!

I'm not going to use that story to formulate my opinion of Sean Penn. Come on, consider the source of the story that started the post. It's from "Iraq Daily -- Published by Ministry of Information" with a smiling pic of Uncle Saddam on the home page. You think the American news media is biased, I bet we see some objective reporting in THAT paper. :D Penn's comments in the story don't quite correspond with his comments in the stories I've seen in American news, where he sounds a bit more intelligent. Compare:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/848239.asp?0dm=C24ML

As far as celebrities voicing their opinions on political issues, I personally have no problem with it, including disagreeing with government policy -- that's one of our rights, last I checked. I do respect Penn for this: "He declined to renew his criticism of Bush on foreign soil, saying he would reserve political comments for his return home." In my mind, that spares him from "Hanoi Jane" status. Seems to me like he's just taking an extreme step of visiting the place to make his own opinion.

I think anyone with a pulpit should feel free to voice their opinions. I know I would if I were a celebrity. And people are free to agree or disagree with the celebrity's opinion based on the opinion's merits or lack thereof. If people agree with the celebrity just because they're a celebrity, well, it's not the celebrity's fault that there are stupid people.

i have a big problem with idiot actors opening up their mouths. they are morons, all of them, spoiled pampered children who become delusional - that since they play interesting sometimes intelligent characters on screen and get to meet truly intelligent and accomplished peoplewho seem to take them seriously that all this means they are smart too and should be listened to.

Alec Baldwin is going to run for President soon, not sure if he's going to run in 2004 but he will run. He's an idiot. He's being sent to parenting school because him and his idiot ex wife don't even know how to raise their own kids. I'd rather have Stephen Baldwin as leader of the free world. Now that would be funny.

I really have no problem with any individual expressing their opinion, actor or not..

But (there is always a but...lol)

In this case, it is pretty open and shut. Put the case as to whether we should resort to open warfare with Iraq aside for a moment... Sean Penn went there to "assess the humanitarian situation" for himself....

It doesn't matter one hoot what the humanitarian situation is... We (the USA and allies) did not cause it with our sanctions. Somehow, while millions of people supposedly starved in Iraq because of the big mean allies' sanctions, Saddam Hussein managed to spend a ton of money rebuilding his troops, adding castles, etc....

So, if he had enough money for that, he had enough money to make sure his people ate.. simple as that....

It is well past time for the people of Iraq to hold themselves and their leadership responsible for their situation... As long as people accept the argument, in any form, that our sanctions are starving Iraqi children, they are missing the point.....

Are we generalizing a bit, Mutt? Seems like you have some sorta deepseated feeling of inadequacy there. :D

OK, I'll go along with you there. I can't decide which of those two is the bigger moron -- Alec, because he doesn't know when to shut his mouth, or Stephen, because he's just plain dumb. Stephen Baldwin's appearance on Fear Factor was one of the top 10 dumbest performances on TV.

is that Don Lapre Throbx?

You are correct, sir.

99% agreement here. My only concern with obliterating Saddam is the thought that, in this case, we know what we're dealing with. Who's going to be in there to replace him? Even if it's someone who loves us, the pro/anti-American sentiment changes with the direction of the wind in that part of the world, and always will, particularly with our ties to Israel. I just don't want to see us get in a spot where we end up down the line with someone even worse than Hussein there. Not that I think it's enough of a concern to prevent us from acting.

Actors suck. they wake up one day and realize they are spending their whole lives pretending to be something or someone else. then they decide to be bold by finally establishing and identity for themselves by "taking a stand" and "speaking out", joining Scientologists or making bold socio-political statements while pleasing their publicists by biting the bullet and dating Whoopi Goldberg for a short time.

do you guys know the story about Don Lapre?

i forgot why i came across that. the guy is broke and has been broke for a long time. the people are still running his informercials, but he is not associated with them in any way and has not been for years.

i do however really think that its good when celebrities use their fame to do good things for people. except for Sally Strothers.

i think the video evidence shows clearly that she was buying Happy Meals for herself with my $3.95/week donation.

Sean Penn is there on a secret mission, he is hoping to meet Saddam.... and then pretend Saddam is a member of the paperratzi and will administer a world class ass kicking.

That or he is just a naive dipshit looking for attention.

Mike, i agree.
i dont think these people even have the luxury of doing much of anything that their publicist, image maker, film company, producer friends, writers and makeup people do not decide in advance. in Sean Penns case, they are still trying to make up for "We're No Angels" and "Shanghai Surprise"

maybe sending a confusing dose of Sean Penns ignorance to Iraq is a pre-emptive strike?

Agreed.

But as moronic and idiotic as actors may be, the public comes off even more so. After all, Ronald Reagan was president for TWO fucking terms!

Most actors are still trying to destroy our gov't to get revenge for the McCarthy era. Generally, actors live their lives being other people, so eventually, they lose it. Remember, though, Reagan was more than an actor. He was head of the SAG, Gov. of CA, and an astute businessman.

No joke, no sarcasm. Hollywood was about the hardest-hit industry then. Believe me, if you scratch most actors, nowadays, you will find a Communist. They're so fuckin' stupid, they can't see that they would lose all their status in any other country (with the possible exception of the UK).

Personally, I haven't seen any of the current crop that is really worth a tinker's damn.

you do realize that you are one of 4-5 people alive today who realize what "the McCarthy Era" was, right?... i know it seems like yesterday to some here *ah hem*... but it was 50 years ago.

i dont think Jason Priestly wakes up every morning in a cold sweat, swearing an oath of revenge against Republicans while swearing loyalty to the Communist Party of the United States.

It's worth noting that the McCarty era was the last time Republicans had complete control over White House and Congress. The only thing that remains to be seen is to what extent history will repeat itself.

Who the hell cares what he thinks? He's just an actor....(and not a very good one at that)....

Hmm..I'm not sure how to answer that..it just seems to do it, for the last few thousand years, many people have written about it, Socrates, Napoleon..

In fact Napoleon shortly after the French Revolution had himself crowned Holy Emperor by the Pope to prove the point that history DOES indeed repeat itself. Is that the kind of proof you want? Be careful what you ask for. Going back to our initial conversation, remember Napoleon started out as a corporal I believe. At one point he was denied French citizenship. Does power corrupt? Absolutely!

But here's something from today, I think these demonstrators are feeling on their skin a slight tingle, a little too reminiscent of the McCarthy itch.
