I was glad to see GW take Trent Lott to the woodshed today. Sure, he could have done it sooner, but he did it pretty strong ... as he should have.
You know, I understand the idea that he got carried away in praising one of the guys who brought him and his ilk into the Republican Party. I don't care WHAT you think about political correctness or any other wopty-shit excuse I've heard offered up, any politician playing on the national scale today who makes remarks like that doesn't have the common sense to run for dogcatcher - and yet he seems destined to represent his party as Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate. This cracker has stepped in this bucket of shit before, so he can't use that excuse either.
My buddy Torone has occasionally crowed that he "taught" me that Republicans passed the civil rights legislation of the 60s. He's right - it was passed by an alliance of liberal Democrats and eastern Republicans (the likes of Percy and Rockefeller) who wouldn't pass the right wing muster of today's Republican Party. He wants to obscure the fact that back then there were liberals and conservatives in both parties to a degree hard to understand today. In the late 60s and early 70s Nixon and Mitchell finished what Helms started, and pulled the element that opposed civil rights into the Republican Party. Lott was simply carrying on in that great Mississippi Democrat tradition expressed by the late Senator Eastland who once, just before he retired/died, told an acquaintence that he "just wanted to go back to Mississippi and make one more ni**er speech before I retire."
Must make the ghost of Lincoln proud, I tell ya ...
