View Full Version : Goddam The Internet Is Tacky
The Internet is beginning to feel like shopping in one of those funny smelling dollar stores. Every spam email and pop up ad I get is for the cheesiest crap - mini race cars, knife sets, surveillance cameras - i'm fucking waiting for the sea monkeys and the x-ray glasses.
it's just really tacky. i don't think when Douglas Copeland coined the term 'cyberspace' he had a digital flea market in mind.

Surely you realize that fog juice far outweighs sea monkeys in the grand "tackiness" realm! :nyanya:
The internet is becoming the world's largest flea market? Maybe
Disappointing - definitely
With the opportunity to accelerate the information age the path of least resistance and it's close cousin the lowest common denominator rear their ugly heads
The irony being that most (early) internet users are educated and have above average incomes
Is the flea market appearance and attitude due to the low barrier to entry for businesses or does Ebay (yes you too can buy everyone's junk - welcome to the world's largest garage sale) and a sluggish American economy contribute? All the above and some other?
Tacky should be John Waters, Pink Flamingos and Black Velvet Elvis - not the internet
I too get 3+ spams a day for mini race cars - now if I can only get a good deal on Thomas the Tank engine stuff :yowsa:

You want tacky? It's going to be coming...in droves ;)
My wife waited for the grand opening of the nnew 99 Cent Megastore (yes, we're super cheap motherfuckers, my relatives still insist on celebrating Christmas, fuck them, they get a ceramic bordhouse from the 99 Cent Store). Although she did get an awesome Razor Scooter for 99 Cents (grand opening promotion). She was joking with the checkstand clerk about "so, when are you guys going to be on the internet?" and the clerk actually said "according to our store manager, we're going to have an internet website in January".
You think the Internet is tacky now? Just wait until shoppers can go online and buy a whole lot of crap for 99 cents....
Let the tackiness begin!

In all fairness, I use the internet almost exclusively these days for information, shopping, work :) , etc.
I read the Atlanta paper and the small local paper online. I read Boortz since I can't get his radio show, when I have a question regarding laws, medical information, and such, I go to the internet.
Like the past few years, I'll do almost all my Christmas shopping online. I buy things throughout the year also. I haven't been inside a mall in years! I needed a new copy of Quicken recently (1999 didn't like XP :agrin: ) and in 10 minutes, I had a new copy. Without even having to brush my hair! I do hours of research on cars before I buy them, including seeing dealer inventory and getting online quotes - saves a ton of time at the dealership! And I find out information about my migraines before my doctor does.
My kid has done every college registration online, as well as taken summer courses over the internet. His HS had grades and teacher comments online. Right now I'm taking a RE class over the internet.
Not to mention I'd be working in some crappy office wearing a dress suit and wearing panty hose instead of sitting here in a T-shirt and sweatpants if there were no internet :cdance:
Do I have to put up with some crappy pop up ads and spam in order to get all this? Sure! But IMHO, for me, it's MORE than worth it - something's gotta pay for all the free crap I get, hehehe. :okthumb:

Would you like 250 free business cards?
Free DirecTv?
Low cost insurance?
Interest rates are dropping!
Lonely?
Special cash grant for you!
$866 prize confirmed for you!
At least the pump and dump stock scams have calmed down...

I keep getting spammed by AOL - they are using adult technique - JOIN FREE type stuff, and when you leave they hit you with a pop up console!!
I find it very ironic they sue CEN about spam, put up all kinds of filters, block legitimate mailers, but yet I am getting 3-4 spams a day from them across all kinds of email addresses.
Of course they are not spamming themselves, they are paying other people to do it for them, and they have referal codes and everything.
Amazing....

Actually, I don't get very much porn spam anymore either... haven't had an american wives spam in maybe 6 months... 99% of the emporer ashok stuff seems to have dried up... I get the occasional beast / bullshit type stuff, but not very often.
I actually wonder if the moves by Visa / billing companies have made it just a little too hard to make money on that route for the moment?
Anyway, about 70% of all the spam I get now comes from a few sources, as they all use the same made up bullcrap address at two domains that I own. Cutting off those two will cut my spam down to maybe 300 pieces a day, almost managable...

That is extremely funny you should say that. I actually get spam every second day asking me if I want to start my own online dollar store.

I always thought it was William Gibson in Neuromancer that coined the term Cyberspace? Anyone else chime in?
