The world's largest online auction site eBay has been targeted by fraudsters using a shadow site to steal credit card details from its 55 million customers.
The scam involved sending e-mails to customers asking them to log on to a Florida-based website - ebayupdates.com - and re-submit their financial details.
"We at Ebay are sorry to inform you that we are having problems with the billing information of your account," the e-mails said using an incorrect spelling of the company's name.
"We would appreciate it if you would visit our website [Ebay Billing Center] http://www.ebayupdates.com and fill out the proper information that we are needing to keep you as an Ebay member."

Maybe bidding for hanging and pregnant chads?
Anybody wanna bid for a scud missile in lost property,

Marty that is a similair scam that I used to see pop up on AOL. Someone would send you and IM or E-mail telling you that you need to update your information and sent you to a webpage. The page lookedvery offical, hadsame logos andeverythign else. Some scams just were taking id/passwords ( probably so people could log onto your account and spam), and some even had places to put Credit Card information.
I imagine lots of people fell for it.....
These people should go to jail....

I almost did Mike. I got the message in my email at AOL and thought it was legit but half way filling the form out I changed my mind. Something wasn't right.
It seems that fraud to that degree could be traced. At some point credit cards will be processed, right?
It's not just adult. It's all ecommerce. Maybe MC/Visa knows this and will take realistic action to help prevent this.

Another non-ecommerce scam was just busted in the UK.
It happened in Oz a couple of years ago....
The scammers put a fake panel on the cash dispenser
of an ATM machine. You get your card back but it appears
not to be dispensing any money - the money instead is
falling into a slimline tray. When you walk away with your card
they wait a few minutes and return to empty the box
that contains your cash.
Another similar scam has a false card slot that swallows your card,
they even stick a message saying
'if no response, enter your card number several times'
and there's the conman behind you watching the numbers you enter.
After you give up, they collect your card and use it elsewhere.
Nice world!
