I was wondering...what do you find to be the 3 biggest obstacles when attempting to succeed as an adult webmaster?

Serge,

yep, new and fresh ideas seem to be getting tougher and tougher to come by.

Nick, traffic is king of course. We just opended our new "ad" store, seems to be converting real well. Being overseas, less hassles and problems for those webmasters with the big lists :)

Traffic, conversions and staying interested. Porn is boring.

Nick said it

TRAFFIC

TRAFFIC

TRAFFIC

else you better be pretty good at something that somebody will pay you for like web design, graphics, programming, content, writing etc etc

Traffic only comes one way - WORK WORK WORK........oh........and spam, but there's some work that goes into that as well.

Everytime I am on a panel at one of these trade shows it never fails that someone will ask me...

"How can I make a small fortune in this industry?"

My answer is always the same:

"Start with a large one"

Education - Learning what to do, how to do it and why to do it.

Self starting discipline - Taking what you've learned and putting it to good use.

Lasting motivation & discipline - The ability to keep doing it even when times are GOOD, because man it's EASY to buy big ticket stuff and slack off once the checks start flowing well..

Make hay while the sun shines but be a good squirrel and start storing your nuts too.. Doesn't take much to wipe out a fortune nowadays..

In my opinion the largest obstacle in this industry, like any other, is SELF.

Respectfully,
Dennis

yeah, I was out of town for a week over thanksgiving, now I've been sick so I haven't down any work at all in a while :(

some people here (like Serge and MikeAI) don't have to work, but for us free site webmasters it has been harder to maintain our previous levels of income over the past 6 months (at least it's been tough for me anyway) so I SHOULD be motivated to work harder. Plus sometimes I count the time spent on the boards as work to make myself think I've worked harder

ah well, one good thing about making less is less taxes to pay

Leaving good partnerships too quickly
Being too "nice"

Time & Time Management - not enough hours in the day to get everything done
KISS - stopping simple ideas from becoming complicated and just DOING IT
Keeping up with changes - you can't close your eyes for 1 second, or when you open them, something big might have changed

There are many obstacles, many listed above seem to be personal, while others are industry obstacles we all face.

Traffic is one issue that everyone faces. IT is getting more and more difficult every year. The days of easy traffic are long gone, and the days of quality traffic are following right behind.

Processing is another issue everyone has to deal with, including free sites, hosting companies and everyone else - process is the lynchpin we all rely upon. Lately all 3rd party prcoessing has been in the dumps - I would imagine this is because of the VISA regulations and these companies trying to get their houses in order.

Motivaion is more of a personal issue. I am not as motivated by this business as I used to be. IN the early days, while the industry was forming it was exciting - I guess it is always exciting to be on the ground floor, and exploring in an industry that is just starting to grow. The old days while a LOT of work ( 70 hour + weeks) were fun, exciting, and rewarding on many levels....

Today I have gone from internet porn maverick, to small company manager. I spend a lot of my time being a shop keeper... I do try to keep up the challenges, but once a certain level of success is held, it because the focus of the owners to keep these levels.

MattK - Beleive me I am always working. Even while on vacation in DisneyWorld with my family I have my laptop and am posting on Oprano ( checking e-mail, staying in touch with office, etc... etc....)

Vick also raises another issue and that is competition.... back in the day there was not nearly as much, and there were some standards people held up - now because money is scarce people continue to do more and more shady stuff to make a buck. This impacts the industry negatively...

Sorry for long post, this is a good tread.

I am going to come back to this. I'd love to elaborate but have deadlines, site updates and three projects in the cue.

I try to keep up on Oprano.

A morning without Oprano is like....hmmm... not having my morning coffee. My eyes just can't open without that stimuli!

So everyone, if I miss something, one of your replies or questions, please nudge me with an ICQ 365555

whoa, I'm not calling anyone lazy (except myself), I just said you probably did not *have* to work if you chose not to. :)

I personally wished I would have worked harder a couple years ago when it was easier to make money. Of course I wasted a lot of the $ I made anyway, but that's another story

well, i went board scanning today...
had a few minutes to kill and clear my head
:agrin:

anyways, saw this topic on every board....

just like any other business, the obstacles are your individual desire, your individual perseverance, and your individual motivation to succeed.

pretty simple, but the same 97% of the people that can't cut the rigors of self employment in the real world, for some reason think they can make it here without any of the above mentioned traits, and that is an unfortunate misconception.

Amen!

I can't tell you how many people in my life have wanted to escape their failing careers thinking they could make it in porn easy. I guess that may have been the case in 95 - not now.

Even someone who has been in adult for over 15 years, know that it's about consistency. Even when times are tough the strong survive. Every aspect of your life becomes enriched when you finally "get it".

Sure maybe I stayed because I like making money when I sleep or deciding it's a beach day and not an html day. Through the years I've learn the discipline needed to stay focused and my ass if covered. No matter how hard that wind shifts my sails, my ass is covered and there’s ALWAYS going to be a plan A, B, C & D.

The biggest problem I’ve seen in porn amongst my peers is that they don’t diversify enough. They tap into something, start making money, start having fun and think that pot will always be full. That’s a bad move.

Wow, I never I would get that much replies and of THAT quality. Thank you so much for all your replies...I makes me realise things I would never have!

See, I find it interesting when you realise that it's like any other businees or project you havè: the secret is action.

Not whimpy action, but Massive, Diversify Action.

Be well ;)
