"Everything happens for a reason". This is one of the most popular explanatory expressions of
our time. With it, one can explain such things as why little Johnny has cancer, why Tammy
got hit by a drunk driver and why grandma got run over by a raindeer. You can further explain
such oddities of life as why you failed out of high school or why you cut your finger
off in a blender while trying to make a frozen mudslide.
Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
Why?

i think that line of thinking is just like religion... its primary purpose is to provide comforting and convenient answers to very difficult or unanswerable and often very painfull questions. its a way of finding some sort of closure where otherwise there could not be any.
Austrian psychologist Viktor E Frankle created a branch of psychology based on theories of mans basic need for some sort of meaning in life which he used to explain a lot of what motivates us as people to push forward and survive. It also applies to death and tragedy. People are driven to find meaning in death as well. How do you rationalize the unthinkable? No one is real hip on considering the finality of death either... and certainly no one is fond of being reminded of their own mortality daily, much less that of those they care about and love.
i tortured myself for years by the fact that i was very easily able to accept my mothers death when i was 15. of course it was a huge emotional event for me but i never told myself those same things that everyone else was at the time... "shes in a better place now" "it all happens for a reason", "its all part of a grander plan" etc.
I really believed that she was killed (by a drunk driver in a car wreck), that these things happen, it can happen to any of us at anytime and that is just a fact of life. i was really devistated by the loss but i always felt it was really unhealthy to lie to myself about it as well. I also remember how everyone around me suddenly got religious. How suddenly there was a God, a Heaven and Hell. How suddenly everyone believed. I remember thinking how strange it was. But then again, they were able to accept it in their own way and explain it all away and eventually be comfortable with the situation. i however, tortured myself for years because my little computer like brain, would not let me do that.
it made me realize that ignorance is truly bliss. why be burdened with such complex philosophical, moral, theological and scientific questions? why needlessly fold under the crushing weight of all of them combined when they crash down on you in an unexpected tradgedy?
and who is happier in the end?... the person who can explain it all away with ease and be happy and content? or the person who cant?

Wow Colin- this may be too early for me!
For me there is a microcosmic and macrocosmic explanation. What happens due to collective unconsciousness and what occurs in our own realities can seem very contradictory to someone who glances without investigation. There so many answers for what is suppose to be unanswerable. The great mystery we all try to define. My words might mean the same as someone else’s but as we know, words are far too inadequate to explain the mysterious in life.
I’ve spent years reading, exploring, investigating so many theories on life and why things happen. Much of it makes sense while some of it makes no sense to me at all. Through all of that I’ve reached some of my own simple conclusions.
I believe in karma and three fold law. For every three positives you project you receive and vise versa for negative. Karma is not instant. You can have karmic debt that is years old and the only way to clean it up is through consciously working on it. Maybe this isn’t the reason you cut your finger or a loved one dies, but on the grand scale there is a type of order.
I also believe in cause and effect. Our actions have domino effects and only when we truly begin to live consciously, considering the repercussions of our actions, will we begin to notice how it relates to our life.
Everyone measures the quality of life differently. There have been a few posts here about family and life & I admit that I was a little surprised. On one level so many people believe in doing the right thing because it’s the right thing and then they turn around and contribute to the things that could affect their family and quality of life. I don’t think anyone can escape contradictions nor do I think anyone really knows why things happen the way they do. The only thing that I’m REALLY certain of is that by monitoring & correcting my karma & living consciously, I can shape my destiny.

Dianna,
That is interesting. I have some questions.
If I project 2 positives, would I receive 2 back or still owe one? Why 3? Who does the counting?
If karma can take years to receive back, how did anyone figure out that it is 3 you get back when your owed karma would turn into a virtual continuum all stacked up waiting to be dealt back over a period of years?
If I perform a negative karma event does the universe sometimes force someone to perform a negative karma event back on me to even the score? That seems unfair to the other person.

Colin it's just called three fold law. No one is really counting. I envison it almost like a bank. I try to balance my life so that I lave time for contributions to life instead of sucking it up all the time.

So many consequences follow from every event in life - both good and bad- that it would be surprising to not find positive events that would not have occured otherwise. How do we connect two seemingly unrelated events and say that the first was a cause and the second a reason?
A loved one dies. I am heartbroken and move to a new city. Eventually, in the new city good things start to happen in my life. Surprised? Can these good things really be the reason that my loved one died?

Life is complex and yet simple. I don't beleive anyone has the answers. I hink we find what works for us and adopt it as religion, spirituality, etc. That's why they call it faith and not fact.

If no one is counting, how does the universe know when the 3 has been reached and it is time to start dealing back good karma? When you are at 2, is it waiting?
A REALLY good question to WITCH I'd like the answer: If I stop doing good deeds, can I wait until nothing happens good to me and then know I am even with the universe?

The *idea* I like the most is that of spirits moving through lives, in each life experiencing something that relates to the life before.
Karma might be something that takes tens of thousands of years, so really, is it relevant in an individual lifetime?
Spiritualists believe Past life regression is a method of taking you back to a life before this one, and reliving events stored deep in your sub-conscious ... its believed that if you are aware of the events which happened to you in previous lives, the negative events which have occured, you can work towards correcting them in the current life.
I have had several clairvoyant, tarot and palm readings and have experienced 1 past life regression, it scared the hell out of me and i'm hoping to get the courage to go back for number 2.
During this I have learned a few things that could be true, or could be co-incidence.
In summing up my career path, my last reading said that in my past lives, I was an inventor, and I have only just in this life time, got the technology i need to invent the things my cosmic purpose wants me to invent. (i added that last bit). She went on to explain that stress would have a bad effect on my health this year, mostly effecting my stomach and digestive system (her words). I have been to hospital twice this year for digestive system problems, after the reading.
I was told in January, that it would be 8 months before my passions in my career would start to pay off. I launched PurveBucks pay per signup program in august ... I really tried to get it launch earlier ... april was my goal. so why did it take until august, despite my efforts? I could explain it as 'these things happen' ... or perhaps that was when it was supposed to happen.
I like these co-incidences, I could write 100's of pages on the things I have been told, that relate VERY CO-INCIDENTALLY to events in my life ... I like having an 'idea' and although I know my 'idea' could be as wrong as the next persons, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than basing our lives on a book full of fables.
I used to go to sunday school (religious child care for kids while sunday church is on). My mum always gave me a choice of whether to go or not, never forced religion on us but explained god in a way that made me understand why some people choose to believe. In sunday school, (I was 6) I remember getting told to sit in the corner for continually arguing that why should we believe if we can't see, and why did god let so many bad things happen if he loved us and if adam and eve started the world, does that mean everyone is related and why are some people black and some people white?
Aren't all of these things just 'tools' for us to come to the same conculsion 'that's just the way it is'?

The scene in the matrix, where the dude with the nasally voice meets with the agent and eats and tastes a steak.
Ignorance is bliss, I want to be able to taste food, be ignorant to the pain, and I don't want to remember anything.
Should've taken the other pill ;-)

I think everything happens for a reason :)
There are a lot of people that I've met, things that I've done, places I've been, jobs I've had, etc. that were all a chain of events. When I first got divorced, I thought it was the worst thing that could have happened to me, but when I look back, it was really the best. Not just because of the dope I was married to, but that put in place a chain of events that wouldn't have happened had we not gotten divorced.
Had I stayed married, I'd be a housewife with 4 kids and driving a Volvo and living in a McMansion on 1/4 acre of land, hehehe.
And I also believe in Karma - bad and good.
I've never been to a psychic - too afraid of what they might tell me :zoinks:

Peaches,
This begs the question - can bad things that happen only be the causes of future good events or is it possible that bad things today are the consequence of good things that happened in the past? In other words, if bad thingshappen for a reason (to create future good things) - can good things happen for a reason (to create future bad events). Why or why not?
Example: I win the lottery. Later in life I am a drug addict and messed up my life. Can I then say "everything happens for a reason" and that winning the lottery happened in order to make me a drug addict?

Oh, Colin, sometimes you make my head hurt! :agrin:
IMHO, yes, many bad things happen as a result of a good thing happening. You marry the girl of your dreams and find out she's carrying some mutant gene that makes all your children born profoundly retarded and die w/in a year (happened to a friend of mine, so I'm not creatively morbid :) ).
Because you can't have kids of your own, you decide to adopt older children with medical problems. One turns out to be an idiot savant and wins a huge award for showing others how to convert garbage into energy. Then stabs you (in keeping with the "Holiday Stabbing Spirit"). Good-bad-good-good-bad. Had you not adopted this child, they wouldn't have invented the garbage=power thing and not helped others. But you'd also still be alive :awinky:
Then again, maybe you would have become a drug addict even if you hadn't won the lottery - as a result of a DIFFERENT event :rokk:

Good morning,
Diana have some interesting point about karma, I do believe in action and reaction, but not 3 for 1 or any numbers, every single action positive or negative in many times will be send it will be back in the same natures it been send, if positive things will back in positive things, same for negative, and we don't realize most the time it circle in our body before been send, "we breather what we think" how Diana said about karma isn't instant I agree, but I think this topic for me only make sense if we not limited life between born and die, make no sense, for exemple; when we think about children who born with out...a arm or leg or any disease or even die after born, or any drastic situation in life, or children super inteligent like play piano at age of 2 years old or read in this age or anything similar in this level, with out never been learning in "this life", but if you think this ability is in her memory no in a abstract way but in form of lived experience of this spirit and is there in the memory how we all have our all experience record in our memory like a computer and lots things can be access. We have conscience , unconsciousness and subconsciousness ( hope the word is right) so in the conscience we have our regular memory like...our infancy until today and lots times we even remember clearly this time, in the unconsciousness can be the time we was in mothers utero and any trauma that we can have in our life how said some phycologist, what is interesting is the fact of the subconsciousness is biggest in information then conscience and unconsciousness what thinking with logic should be unbelievable amount of information and is not easy accessible , ( we don't have the root password...lol) I say not easy because I believe it is access when people do memory regression, at the same time any serious person who study about life will not recommend regression, because God or any name we want give for our Creator gave to us the tools to evolve, the feeling of evolution is innate in us, at the begin we had our first necessity that was surviver, soon the men was evolve to start have conscience, he was completely responsible for his action. But I think still not satisfactory any explanation with the view of only this life! I keep think how we can be much evolve today then thousand years ago if everytime someone born is a completely new soul with no record of any experience to be continuous? Guess we will never get out from the time of cavern men, the macro and micro world evolve with out our permission as we can observe, "Nothing in the natures is lost, everything is a transformation" And I think 100% we are not just part of this natures, but very important part of it what bring me again for the concept of lots things can't be rationally explained with the view between born and die. I true believe day will come no matter how long it take that we will wake up, because we will be more evolve anyway and will discovered this physical word and our physical body isn't the only thing aorund us, we already know the fourth state of matter and if you think this same physical world with this hard appearance is made of elements we even can see with our eyes, like radio waves that we can't see, but how we learn to use it and see the efects we believe it exist. Anyway, guess I wrote too much already...is the theme, make my english worst then it is. This is a very delicate conversation because it can't be view in just one angle, is so many things to considerate and I personally encourage people to study about it in the all aspect with open mint and spirit of investigation, is just passionate!
Just to finished what isn't finished, no matter what you believe, the good religion or thinking is the one who make the men better person each day, because no one change a world with out change for better your self first, the work has to be done from inside and automatically will change the outside, just imagine how many millions of people we have in this world, imagine the day this same millions of mind will be educate bylove and understand, how powerful it can be, for good of course, even the movies show to us the good always win, the rules of Universe is inside each of us, we are a organize organism what doesn't disorganize after we left the body, still alive and act and different dimension similar at this world, we not different people after across the line between physical and spiritual, our mind never stop even when we sleep...or die...
Sorry if it can be boring, the topic was there and get my attention, hugs and lots love for everyone

In the concept of karma, three fold law, etc. how does one know what actions will give one good karma or bad karma?
If I kill my dog's fleas is that good karma or bad? This is important! Bad for the fleas. Good for the dog. How does one decide? Am I building good or bad karma by providing porn on the internet. Is it the intent that matters or the result?
Doesn't it all just boil down to how you "live" your life? I mean, if you're a rude, crass, uncaring evil bastard who does BAD things to everyone around you, then 9 times out of 10, BAD things will happen to you as well. Its the environment around you or the "space" you occupy - fill it with bad and bad happens, fill it with good and odds are good will happen. Karma or Dharma, like begets like... reap what you sew and all that rot...

Assuming reincarnation. I think it would take 6 million generations for Hitler's Karma to get paid back to normal. Something like 300,000 years.
Question. How can Hitler's Karma ever get back to normal? 6 million generations of punishment on his soul would somehow even everything out?

I think the simpe version is best. I agree.
But I guess the whole point of discussion is understanding why. Colin MUST dissect every thread! You know how he is!
I always read his post and I'd love to spend hours upon hours in discussion. Things are a bit crazy right now. Unfortunately I'm not a triva person and I just don't retain a lot of research. I add it to my brains hardrive, I hit defrag every now and then keeping bits and pieces and the jist of it all, however I just don't have room for every single detail. My personal research has pretty much been personal- trying to find some kind of meaning to my life.
So Colin- I'm not being mean when I say you hurt my brain or when I don't offer you a hardcore debate. I just don't have time to siphon out facts and details. I simply state my personal opinions as my own.
I enjoy reading the things you and JR post. One of the MAIN reason I even come to Oprano is that I need intelligent discussion as well as all the playful shit. I don't relate to morons and stupid mean people. My time is extremely valuable and I find my time best spent here. You are certainly a part of that reason.
Gotta run to a meeting!
kewl topic!
Diana, I read your post/s and agree on most all accounts, including colin's posts...hehe
and who is happier in the end?... the person who can explain it all away with ease and be happy and content? or the person who cant?
I think this sums it up. For some, (colin) the answers are not easy to come by and satisfactory to their intellect, while for others, the answers they find are.
If Colin is content with his own answers and this creates 'happiness' in his life and thoughts, so be it. If someone believes that 'everything happens for a reason' and yadda yadda and this makes it easier for them to take the tough times, that's a good thing.
I always thought of the 3-fold law in the respect that all action comes back to you in 3 ways, in the physical realm, in the intellectual realm, and in the spiritual realm.
Everything you do affects you tangibly, intellectually, and spiritually be it negative or positive.
So for me, it's not a matter of counting....
And yes, I do believe it's the intention behind the action that counts. :awinky:

Dianna, :)
I think for me the ideologies of 'Karma' and the 'Three Fold Law' are two separate things....they are two different concepts, yet related in some ways.
I don't believe so much in Karma, as I do the Three Fold Law....it just makes more sense to me and my world....and it might not make any sense to someone else....and that's okay. (well, IMHO they are just naive and don't see the bigger picture.....yet) :nyanya:

Would you believe I'm on the wagon.
Just a note to say guess sometimes my hardrive is run out space and I am transferring it for others "servers" doesn't mean they have to host it, faith is not a imposition, is a conquest.
Thanks God we are far way from the dark years of Inquisition, and better, in a free speech country I think, yes, my flag is up and will remain up always. If someone is serious interesting about Reincarnation, the literature about it is too vast and never finished because it is a amazing study even if you don't believe you learn so much about everything, is a hard work with years and years of serious research, experiment, lots times even to argument about it, we need know better what is the concept of Reincarnation is about or at least the basic , I think to make compare or debate about any believe we need have some knowledge in that specific area of believe or religion, whatever the topic is. The Spirit Doctrine do not have space for sarcasm and ironic. And back to the topic "everything has a reason to happen", the amaze Spirit of Jesus said in this parabola " For the sword you will kill, for the sword you will die", it can be a description of action and reaction what make everything happen for a reason, but we still don't understand there is a limitation from our level to absorb certain loads of information, the program we running in our "Hardrive" still not compatible with God's technology, it will need thousands of upgrade to be there, guess we run a 1.something version of 10 ( just a analogy). for our limited understand God is a cause of everything, a wonderful phrase what resume everything, no matter what believe you have it is basic, simple and still so difficult to us understand and follow it; "LOVE GOD OVER ALL THE THINGS AND OTHERS LIKE YOUR SELF".
About assuming reincarnation how it was put on at Hitler's Karma or destiny or anything you name it, because I always think sometimes what will be the luck of this poor spirit who committed horrible crimes and under my believe and knowledge about Reincarnation how the question was put on, it could be, I am not afirm has to be this way, but under my believe how told could be possible when I think for every human born is a soul or spirit how you call it designate, and spirit like Hitler could be in some dimension on state of lethargy from his onw actions what bring hem for this state what is the worst and security prision since he can't act in any dimension, and we don't know about the time he will remain in there, I don't think our understand about time and space can be completely applicable in other dimension. We have lots ovule already fecundated and frozen in laboratories that will need a spirit to vivified if one day or other the fecundated ovule will come be a baby, and the spirit who will be designated for each specific ovule what is already predestinate could be one like Hitler or any criminal like hem, a fluidic line is generate from the spirit who will reincarnation when a baby is in develope, is amaze the details of this process, too many things to be write here... more the babys body develope more the spirit lost your conscience to be minimize "stuff", more this spirit is evolve less he lost his conscience because understand the process... guess I'll boring people too much, my flag is up yes, but is never a imposition how I told before, wonderful books has been write and if anyone feel like know little better for curiosity the literature have" The book of Spirits", " The Book of Mediums", very interesting and "The Geneses " " The Gospel" by Allan Kardec what is just amazing! And hundreds and hundreds of wonderful books and different authors that analyze the reincarnation and others aspects of life, science, History, Geoghrafy, Socialism, everything...I am not looking for anyone agree with my believes, is just a exposure and my right to think and have free speech as everyone else and never be afraid to talk about it or anything else, as the same time have respect for everyone believe, it is not a chalenge.
God bless all of us and have a great night everyone

Let's face it... in a perfect world we'd be able to read each others minds.
Then again, most of us would be on each others shit list? Am I right?

There would be a lot more sex too , DV :)
Yeah in a perfect world I'd at least be getting laid more than Voodooman.... Oh, wait....
Questions require answer, the day people will read others mint it will be so evolve and probably lots more educated that will not have any "shit list" to be in B)
A quick stop for good night and an interesting link I found time ago;

Be happy :rokk:
I believe sometimes people give you a reason to make things happen to them, how's that? ;)
Let's face it... in a perfect world we'd be able to read each others minds.
Oh no! Would you want your innermost thoughts pried into?
Think you can't get silence and or peace and quiet now, think if you could pick up other thoughts
Imagine it in a mall - what a ton of junk that would be - it hurts to even think about it
Things happen both for a reason and by the random
and we are just a big cosmic dump - the big bang shit! :moon: :barfon:
and things tend to even out, call it Karma or just the odds - time being the constant and forever things are bound to even out (unless you're the Cincinnati Bengals)
I think the voodoo practitioners are right
The only powers your Gods have - are the ones your faith give them
See you all at the restaurant at the end of the universe B)

i dont believe in karma
But i do believe in feeling good about my actions and choises i take and make.
A lot of times i choose to ignore the setbacks and negatives and look for ways to turn it into something good. I dont go about it by forcing these things, its just what i've noticed about myself looking back and studying my decisions.
I've also been fairly lucky, for example i lost my gold bracelet on the plane and later found it at the check in counter someone turned it in. The other day i came out of the gym and found my phone in the middle of the parking lot, didnt even know i lost it.
So maybe good deads do come around.

I kind of believe things (especially the most seemingly random things) happen so we learn and grow.. like to help thicken the skin.
..and that anything above that is subject to (and possibly ruined by) interpretation.
Things happen. We then take that event and turn it into whatever we want. Like a young kid gets hit by a bus, the kids parents are crushed, it's a horrible thing - but to the old man next door who hates kids in general - and this one specifically for breaking his window with a baseball, it's not such a bad thing, he may even be overjoyed by the accident.
Same event, different meaning. Attitude and belief specific in my opinion.
I think things mean whatever we want them to (at least to an extent) but at the same time that we have more impact on things than we think.
Intent influences action, action influences results with a hunk of randomness thrown on so we can never fully figure things out... Leaving the point of our existence (whatever that may be) intact.
I don't think anything happens consistantly enough for any rule or theory to apply as much as we'd like them to.

I know a lot of people who would be in trouble because they can't deal with the repercussions of their thoughts leaking out.
I’m known for being extremely outspoken and brutally honest. I often think out loud tossing ideas and though around waiting for something to click.
I really don’t care if someone reads my thoughts as long as they do what I’m thinking! lol

Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
************************************************** *****
Things "Happen for a reason" mainly to keep one's sanity.
More importantly....Do you believe in "Devine intervention"?
"I've also been fairly lucky, for example i lost my gold bracelet on the plane and later found it at the check in counter someone turned it in. The other day i came out of the gym and found my phone in the middle of the parking lot, didnt even know i lost it."
Try this slavik. Throw a hundred dollar bill out your car window and see if it
comes back to you. If it does you will know you are 'Even Steven'
(loose Seinfeld reference - god I love that show)
But i do believe in feeling good about my actions and choices i take and make.
Slavdogg,
This is exactly it. (in my little world anyway) Every action affects you intellectually and spiritually as well as physically. Sooo, when you 'feel good' about doing something I believe it is the positive action coming back to you intellectually. (the emotion of 'feeling good' comes after your mind decides the action was a positive one)
Let's face it, when we do something 'negative' per se, we know it. We go through it in our minds, feel crappy about it and either a: dwell or b: try to ignore it or go into denial mode (which is only surface and allows for more deeper scars). Either way we are affected by this negative action in a negative way.
Hmmm, Divine Intervention? That depends on what you mean by 'Divine'. Do you mean a personified deity who feels you could use a boost in the situation? Or do you mean the 'cosmic force' that needs to balance out the negative and positive forces thereby 'intervening' in the current situation?
Oh the joys of understanding our existance...hehe :gbounce:

Things happen merely because they happen...
There is no why or wherefore...
There is no grand plan.....
We (Human beings type one each) are the same as everything else in the universe.... No more important, no less important.....
The idea that when we die (or those close to us die) that that is it, the end, fini is scary as all hell for most of us. We seek some continuance out there in the cosmos.... But there really isnt any... When it's over, it'as over...end of story...do not pass go, do not collect $200.00.
Religion wants us to believe in some kind of afterlife, some kind of reason for existing... This is merely religion's attempt to control (yes, religion's ultimate purpose is it's original purpose, to cotrol the masses, much as government's purpose is to control the masses)... Religion says to us taht life is brutal, but it is worth it because there is a reward waiting at the end if you persevere...
But the truth is that there is no reward...it just ends....
Realization of this truth can be terrifying.... People can feel, "well, if it all leads to nothing, why continue, might as well end it now.." and some do...(the zen master points out to the pupil that many times a monk will reach satori during the act of suicide...)
But the truth is that there is no reward...it just ends...
Whew! Well I'm glad SOMEONE figured it out. :awinky:
I'm just teasing....but ultimately you cannot claim your ideas are 'the truth' without proof....and no one has proof...at least not yet.

but ultimately you cannot claim your ideas are 'the truth' without proof
************************************************** ******
Lack of "verifiable" proof of any of the various theories out there is the proof of my truth....(personal proofs do not count...I saw god once, noone else saw him, of course nobody else took any of the "brown" acid either ;p)
I am, therefore I think I am...........
