Most companies are hosting holiday parties this year and planning to serve alcohol, according to a recent survey of our readers. If your firm is among them, here's a sobering thought: You could be held legally liable if an employee drinks too much at a company-sponsored event and gets into an accident driving afterward........

I have a good friend whose company provides free taxis for the entire Christmas season. They all get a phone number they can call at any time and the company picks up the tab :)

When my kid was in ROTC, they gave them a phone number to call if they ever needed a ride home.

And there's a Christmas party I go to every year that's held at a hotel with everyone getting rooms - makes it a LOT more fun and less worry - especially for those of us that live 1.5 hours away! :rokk:

These days I'd be a nervous wreck (no pun intended) sending someone home after too many drinks - who cares about liability - I worry about my friends. :bdance:

As Internet companies emerge out of the wild wild West era......... it would be a good idea to start looking at liability issues. Many have way too much to lose to not carry good liability insurance. I have been surprised that something has not happened to date, to call this issue to the attention of many companies who are involved in sponsoring events that include drinking.

That is why the age for our shows is generally 21. It helps protect the sponsors from unknownly serving under age drinkers. It is certainly not a failsafe, but at least a step in the right direction.

I think drunk drivers should be dealt with as severely as possible. They are still getting off too easily. I know these people don't want to do anybody harm but even when I'm very drunk I know that getting behind the wheel is very risky to myself and others.

Do you have those TV ads in the U.S. where they show home movies of
people who were killed by drunk drivers? There's one of them from a birthday party of a 3 or 4 year old, happy middle class family, the father is obviously taking the video of the party and everybody's saying hi to the camera and the last thing is that the party is over and the birthday boy i guess is headed for bed, he says in the cutest little kid voice 'See ya tomorrow!' then the screen goes black and you're informed that the entire family was killed by a drunk driver the next day. I think the ad is at least 5 years old but it has stuck with me.

Since drunk drivers usually are good people, just stupid, there is a sentiment that what does it prove ruining two families by imprisoning somebody who probably has children of their own, or a teenager with his life ahead of him, that what they will have to live with is punishment enough but I don't care, i think you should do serious time for it. As a deterrent to others. Man i know so many people who drive drunk. Even my old man would drive home with about 4 Scotch's in him and I used to
yell at him for it.

I agree completely.

Two of the editors at DMOZ were killed by a drunk drivers in 2000 and 2001.

Jessie was 20 years old, riding her bike.

Ted was killed when his car was hit by a drunk driver during a police chase.

Both drunk drivers had previous drunk driving records.

This pissed me off the most:

On Nov. 3, 2000, Norbert logged another drunken-driving arrest while driving a rented Daewoo Leganza. He failed to make a court appearance, and a $30,000 warrant was issued for his arrest. He also failed to show up in court for the Jan. 31, 1999, incident. A no-bail warrant was issued, and his probation was revoked.

After one of his arrests, Norbert was angry but resigned. Spewing profanity at CHP officers, he said: "You got me."

You got me? @#$%&@*# ......after over 3 arrests and all he can say is 'You got me.'???

Swine...pure swine.

Where I live, during the holiday season, the city gets together a volunteer effort to offer free transportation to anyone who needs it....all you have to do is call the number.

I will be volunteering my driving one night during the holidays. It's so easy to be able to give to the community this way. :agrin:
