I think it's a good idea, which is overdue.

dantheman - I outlined a way for .kids to be successful about 18 months ago
Basically it has to be a commercially driven entity

long story short - a company like Disney has to hire people with actual Internet experience and start their own .whatever
and create a haven for kids (with all the appropriate advertising) and then sell the .whatever domains much like any registar

(Disney or whomever could drive traffic from many cost effective sources)

It's a great idea but another case of government intervention won't work but private sector for profit will

GREAT IDEA.

Hope it passes.

Then next time someone says it is unsafe for kids online and tried to pass porn-restrictive legislation, one can answer "There's already .kids". All companies like Disney have to do is point disney.kids.us to the same IP. Very simple. They should be able to get tons of free press for this.

someone says it is unsafe for kids online

I have a problem with that statement - in fact I received an email from a concerned parent about a month or so back and part of the response I sent back to them was

"It is up to parents (like yourself and myself) to be fully aware of their children's Internet activities and for parents to set limits and boundaries for their children and to make sure their children stay within those limits. I didn't create your son. Please do not ask me to raise your son as well. That is your duty. "

Again I feel that the US government has good intentions with this bill but for it to truly be effective and to make a difference the private sector much be included and it must be for profit

As it stands now this is admirable legislation but it lacks motivation (read dollars) for use

I think its a good step, IF something isnt done in the near future the fallout is going to suck.
I agree with vick in that its the parent duty to teach and to know what their kids are doing, but the reality is alot dont:( and thats the problem.
