Went and saw it today, very good movie, very true to the book - the actors fit (and do) the characters so well - excellent casting

even if you haven't read the books it's well worth seeing - the movie is close to 3 hours but you wouldn't know it while watching

I will be surprised if the movie doesn't break every opening weekend box office record ever

we went to a 24 screen mulitplex, bought tickets on line at 10 for a 1:15 showing, by the time we arrived almost every show playing today had been sold out .... and the film was being aired every 30 minutes!

The movie complex couldn't make enough popcorn to meet the demand (not kidding, 30 minutes in the concession line) and this is a huge movie multiplex

I want Faulkes to come visit, can spend some time with my birds

Read the books and you'll be an even bigger fan...sadly, my favorite character was cut from the movie: Peeves The Ghost (was played by Rik Mayal from "TheYoung Ones" and "Drop Dead Fred" in the first movie, but all of his scenes were cut).

I like the second book and movvie a little better than the first. The effects are better in the second one and it's darker...the series gets darker too...Prisoner Of Azkaban (the 3rd) is my favorite of the books so far....

My daughter even named her new doll she got for her brithday Hermione...

And was the only one misty eyed at SPOILER***Hermione getting zapped***END SPOILER? I rememer reading the book, going "damnit" and saw the movie and heard people mutter "damn"

Yes I am a big kid :D
the day I lose my sense of child-like awe and wonderment please shovel dirt over me

Wonder how many people are going to name their daughter's Hermione?

My favorite book so far is The Goblet of Fire, I hear the 5th year will be out this spring

Sykk - am sure the scenes that were cut will make it onto DVD

Teary eye moment - "When Hagrid comes into the great hall" and I'll leave it at that

Colin - if you didn't enjoy the first one you can skip the second
Very much the same genre, many of the same characters, similar setting and story line

Nick - it really doesn't seem like 2 hours 51 minutes while watching
I can never go a complete movie without taking a smoke break (except for the first time I saw Silence of the Lambs and Pulp Fiction) and I made it through without leaving for a smoke

Yeah, Peeves was integral to some of the plot points in Sorcerer's Stone....

I would loved to have seen Rik ham it up as the malevant poltergiest....

I don't really get the whole Harry Potter thing. I grew up playing D&D so I love fantasy - less today than as a teen but I still do. I read a few pages of the first Potter book at the bookstore and it didn't interest me. Then I went to the first movie and didn't care for that either. I DID like Lord of the Rings a lot.

Kudos to Colin for having enough of an imagination to play an RPG. I love 'em myself. Great escapism. It's funny how a couple stupid movies back in the early 80s had people thinking anything associated with Dungeons & Dragons was a bunch of people dressing up and acting things out. So silly.

You wanna see people dressed up and beating the shit out of each other with ritan sticks, check out: http://www.sca.org

CRAZY fuckers but that stuff is fun as hell. You have no idea how fast you can get winded trying to swing a sword with 50 lbs or armor on!

Mark -

When I was a kid we played "Boffle Wars". Get one piece of PVC pipe and enshroud it in foam rubber. Makes a nice sword. A stop sign with two holes drilled in it and a piece of rope as a handle made an excellent shield.

The rules - any limb hit is out of play. Body blows are a kill.

10-on-10 made for one hell of a mad game.

Ahhh, the good old daze. None of us turned out to be murderers but I turned out to be a pornographer. Maybe it was all those scantily clad hot chicks in the Boris Vallejo artwork.

that movie grossed more than 80 mil in its first three days.
i guess the obvious question is "can 10,000,000 10 year olds be wrong"
:bdance:

the first thing i thought about when i read how well it was doing this morning is what impact on concessions a good film has. For example how much more corn/popcorn is sold in a year or even sold a
as a result of a single film like this? what is the total impact of the film on corn farmers and the corn market.

the second thing i wondered, is why is my life so empty and weird that i was thinking about the first thing in the first place?

Nice.

I found caught a few google waves and found the following:

The majority of corn grown in the US ends up as livestock feed. (about 60%). Only 2.5% goes to snack foods, breakfast cereal, snack chips, and other foods.

But still -

According to a study conducted by Nestle, 68 percent of moviegoers buy popcorn.

The "Popcorn Board" gives these numbers. "Americans eat 1,124,600,000 pounds of popcorn each year. About 70 percent of popcorn is eaten at home, and the rest is consumed at movie theaters, ball parks and other recreational events. Americans eat 63 quarts of popcorn per person every year."

In 1999 American farmers harvested 9.4 billion bushels of corn. A bushel is about 35 liters.

2 billion Christians
1.3 billion Muslims
900 million Hindus
369 million Buddhists

Many of whom are 10 year olds.

I actually enjoyed the first movie and so did the kids. Is the second movie as kid-friendly as the first? I've heard from some people that it might be a bit "dark" for the wee ones. I actually want to get the books and read them too.. I love fantasy and I've heard a lot of other adults say they love the books as much as the kids do. Might even read them with the kids kinda thing....at the very least I'd like to have the collection for when my munchkins get old enough to appreciate them.
