Some of you will receive the same email as I did from a feed provider with info on Acacia Media and the patent infringement lawsuit based on a claim they have a patent on all video transmission which is user controlled.

Going a step further
http://www.youmaybenext.com is a site about another internet extortion type deal
where Pangea Intellectual Properties LLC is suing companies claiming that if you use graphical and textual information on a video screen for purposes of making a sale, then you are infringing on their patent

So far it looks like PanIP http://www.panip.com/ is suing small companies that are not in their state of California and basically extorting 5K from them

and it looks like PanIP was set solely for this purpose - the domain panip.com record was created on-> 2000-03-06

this isn't even protection money, this is pay me because my lawyer has a bigger dick that yours and the patent office isn't real familiar with computers (it seems)

This is one of their patents (http://164.195.100.11/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=FT00&p=1&S1='Lockwood,+Lawrence'&OS=Lockwood,+Lawrence&RS=Lockwood,+Lawrence)
and it looks um interesting, need a law doctor to look at it
If I get it correct it says about any internet transaction is covered by their patent hmmmm......

has the media picked up on this yet?

this is amazing. i really didn't know there were companies out there like this, they buy patents for the sole purpose of using it to sue people they think they can get a settlement from.

From the patent link posted earlier:

********************************
. Each remote terminal comprises a video screen and a video memory which holds image-and-sound-generating information arranged to simulate the aspect and speech of an application loan officer on the video screen. The simulated loan officer is used to acquire loan request data from the applicant by guiding him through an interactive sequence of inquiries and answers.
***********************************

lolol.... Now, if I had a talking loan officer coming out of my screen, I might worry....

Other than that, they are describing a computer network, which if what I researched a while back is covered by several other patents filed long before this thing....

This stuff is such bullshit.....

Pan IP has been in the news. They are going after little guys in order to get a war chest to go after amazon, ebay, etc. There is a defense fund somewhere, but i can't find it right now. I think it was the NYTimes where i read about them.

We were served by Tumbleweeds Communication Inc for having Ecards. They wanted 3 cents per card. Evidently transmiting information received via HTTP and sending it in an email with a personal link is there their idea.

Fuckos :matey: like this are a weight on the economy. Any place that spends 3% of GDP on lawyers is going the way of the dinosaur.

my 2 cents.

The thought that any war chest Acacia would scrape together would be big enough to tackle SV, or that ANY investor with half a brain would back them publicly...

That's sillier than a dancing carrot!

The warchest is not as important as sucessfully racking up a lot of wins, the more wins they have before trying to tackle one of the big boys, the more credibility they have when they go to take on a big boy. The little guys cannot afford the representation that the big guys can't, so it makes them easier to beat....

The more wins, the more cases to cite.

Have any of the larger companies stepped up and started a fund to organize a strategic defense ?

Mutt - the number of just such companies that exist for the sole purpose stated would ASTOUND you. We are a litigious society - we allow ourselves to be lead by lawyers "dressed" as politicians - A society mired in legalese... :grrr: And I hate them all....
