You Are a Suspect
By WILLIAM SAFIRE

WASHINGTON — If the Homeland Security Act is not amended before passage, here is what will happen to you:

Every purchase you make with a credit card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send or receive, every academic grade you receive, every bank deposit you make, every trip you book and every event you attend — all these transactions and communications will go into what the Defense Department describes as "a virtual, centralized grand database."

To this computerized dossier on your private life from commercial sources, add every piece of information that government has about you — passport application, driver's license and bridge toll records, judicial and divorce records, complaints from nosy neighbors to the F.B.I., your lifetime paper trail plus the latest hidden camera surveillance — and you have the supersnoop's dream: a "Total Information Awareness" about every U.S. citizen.

This is not some far-out Orwellian scenario. It is what will happen to your personal freedom in the next few weeks if John Poindexter gets the unprecedented power he seeks.

Remember Poindexter? Brilliant man, first in his class at the Naval Academy, later earned a doctorate in physics, rose to national security adviser under President Ronald Reagan. He had this brilliant idea of secretly selling missiles to Iran to pay ransom for hostages, and with the illicit proceeds to illegally support contras in Nicaragua.

-------------------------------------------------------------

There is more to the article. You have to register at the NY Times to read it.

THIS is the kind of bullshit that those in power would like to turn our country into. :steemed: For the record I don't trust either party all that much when it comes to stuff like this. They are trying to put shit like this into action and this is without another major attack. If attacks become a regular thing, like they are in Israel, look for your freedoms to be strpped away one by one.

Where's the part about the government snooping on my subscriptions and prescriptions?

Wonder if he works under cover ... disguised as, say, the man from Roto-Rooter. I cannot believe that man works for the Government.

Not sure if too many of you are familiar with William Safire, but he is certainly not a tool of the Left Wing Media Conspiracy. Safire is probably their most conservative columnist. And at a place like the NY Times you can bet he triple-checked his facts. While I wouldn't take it as the Word of God, Safire has no love for the slathering liberal wolves trying to pick apart this new department.

Exactly Cal. Safire is a well known and respected conservative.

I don't care what William Safire's political leanings are. I just want to know where's the part about the government snooping on my subscriptions and prescriptions?

Not that I would find that too scary. I mean, what's the real danger to me if Uncle Sam sees my Vicodin prescriptions from 1996 or knows that I subscribed to Sports Illustrated in 1999?

I'm doubting the government would put something like that on their website.

'We are pleased to announce that within the next 2 years we will be monitoring all the minutae of your personal lives.'

Safire is a heavy hitter, no doubt he got that type of information from insiders. Like I said in another thread, I'm not a criminal so I don't particularly care. Is it a violation of civil rights? Probably, just look at the people who run our government. Do you want them having information on your shopping and personal habits?

I'm putting my tinfoil helmet back on.
