Scientists may live to rue these next few years.

And while it has nothing to do with Republicans, more scary news for the medical community:

Hrmmm...I don't see the problem with cloning personally...

That is how I plan to live for 300 years...I'm going to farm extra body parts in my basement.

Can some of our resident Republicans fill me in on what the big deal is? Why are they against therapeutic cloning? Is it the Religious Right getting in the middle of things again, or what?

Thanks.

Cal, Cal, Cal ... you don't learn anything, do you? Must be a mistake, or a deliberate misstatement of the facts by the liberal media again. I have it on good authority that GW wouldn't be opposed to something like that, because he's a moderate. Why, to even think the President would follow the demands of the religious right on this issue would be to imply he was in league with them, if in fact such thing as the religious right even existed in any degree larger than the politically-active Wiccans. Don't you read this board? Of course the emperor is wearing clothes....

The first link isn’t scary … it’s just predictable and pathetic. The second one is scary. How quick before someone points out that Detroit has a high % of Arabs …

Yeah didn't mean to imply the first was scary, since cloning research will go on all over the rest of the modern world. Just that scientists will be royally pissed off; not that I would blame them. The stem cell debacle was little twigs, banning all research would be the huge oak logs on the fire.

Let's hope some more relatives of Senators get diabetes and alzheimer's in the near future!

Alzheimers won't do it ... I think's already rampant among politicians of all parties already

This morning I was listening to our local public radio station and one of the morning show guests was an ethno-botanist named Mark Plotkin, who's the co-author of a new book called, "The Killers Within: The Deadly Rise of Drug Resistant Bacteria." Unfortunately, I only got to hear half the program, but what I heard was frightening enough. The audio archive should be up tomorrow, though -- so I and anyone else who might be interested can listen. :D

http://kpcc.org/programming/airtalk/

The overprescription of antibiotics, aggressive marketing and resulting overuse of anti-bacterial soaps, vaccination for everything under the sun (regardless of whether or not there's a real threat of an outbreak); all have contributed to the resistant strains of bacteria that keep cropping up, as well as the skyrocketing numbers of people being diagnosed with auto-immune related disorders. We've been doctored and drug-companied to death, and paid good money for it to boot. Anyone who believes that the FDA, the drug cartel and the medical industry are truly interested in public health is sadly mistaken.

Once again the government is poised to enact legislation based on the moral views of SOME people, without regard for the actual scientific value of the research. And yet, I'll bet the same people who have a moral problem with cloning research have no problem at all with conducting tests on animals; injecting them with pathogens, dousing them with chemicals and god-only-knows what else, just so they can continue to flood the market with cheap products that cause cancer, suppress immune function and take away some of the human body's own form of defense against disease.

Cuz, y'know... a few human embryonic cells strung together is A LIVING HUMAN; whereas that cute little bunny that was just injected with engine degreaser is JUST AN ANIMAL.

Fucking people make me sick.

Didn't want to quote Rox's entire post just to say this:

Could have told you that (resistance to anti-biotics) long ago.

It's been warned about for quite a while now and we have no one to blame but ourselves. Two major factors helped contribute to it. First, many people who run to the doctor and insist on getting medicines for even minor stuff and then you combine that with people who don't follow directions and take ALL of the anti-biotics, but rather stop taking the medicine when they feel better and you get germs that build up a resistance.

You said it, Enforcer! EXACTLY the reason why I haven't been to the Dr. in over 10 years! No prescriptions - heck, I rarely take asprin! And I DON'T get sick! Ok, I get the occasional sinus congestion and head cold, but I always manage it myself and get better - meds are over-rated.... except for Billy - he NEEDS his meds! :awinky:

Right on, TE! That's the main cause of resistant strains. Got a case of the sniffles? Run to the DR. for an antibiotic. Got something that really NEEDS one...Just take it until you feel better. Feed them to your pets, the livestock, get them into the environment every way you can!
