What should we be more afraid of?

GWB with John Ashcroft and the 700 club making porn illegal, overturning Roe vs Wade, kicking the shit out of terrorists and violating our civil liberties through unlawful search and seizure, wire tapping, etc..

or

Al Gore, Terry McCauliffe, Hillary Clinton, et al swiping my money to build larger ranks of people who do nothing and get something at the expense of the producers in this country (only to garner votes). Who want to take away my guns, who are for equal results rather than equal rights, who want to socialize medicine, who want to raise taxes on the achievers, who support hate speech law and who genuinely believe that they Gov't IS the answer. The list goes on and on here.

Let's see.... I could give a shit less about abortion. I personally would not choose it as an option, but believe in the right of the individual to do what they want. I don't believe Gov't should be involved in the first place. But I don't give a shit because it affects me very little. I also do not think porn will be made illegal... too much of a First amendment barrier. It will always be here. I am for killing the terrorists before they kill us (no probs here). There are legitimate concerns on civil liberties, though, and this is troubling.

On the flip side, I do care about my gun rights, my hard earned income, my freedom of speech and thought, and the maintenance of the USA as a capitalist society.

Losing these are a far greater threat to me than the alternative IMHO.

Wig ... embrace your Republicanness. The time for denial is over. Come out of the closet. If you can't be free here on Oprano, you'll never free yourself.

Umm, think about it for a minute. If porn is made illegal, you won't have the money to pay taxes anyway. You will need your gun to protect yourself from all the other assholes that are armed and stupid.

Taking away your civil rights, the right to free speech, the right to operator yoru business is an ABSOLUTE. Tax rates are variables. You will never pay 100% tax, But you can be 100% muzzled or 100% arrested.

Even typing it out, you didn't notice that, did ya?

Alex,

I am fully aware of all the possibilities. However, your extreme scenarios are just that. I cannot base my decisions on that shit.

I believe exactly what I posted. Neither party has my exact interests in mind. I just find the liberal Democrat side much more of a long term risk.

btw, if porn were illegal it would not put me out of business. Sorry. :D

i am more afraid of people who are afraid.

why is it that everying thinks that some sort of enevitable police state is coming and someone is forcing it on you?

last i checked, the government represented the will of the people. laws are often repealed or ruled unconstitutional and generally speaking each party who comes to office runs on the most popular platform possible... which if things goes to far, usually involves undoing or reversing what was done by the previous party.

THAT is how the system works. Its been working well for hundreds of years.
Bush and Jerry Falwell CANNOT do anything that does not withstand the test of the will of the people.

People in the US Government cannot arbitrarily stop porn. They can however make a logical arguement to the people that a child should not be able to go to a public library and see a 13 year old drunk girl fucking a Greate Dane. They can argue that there is too much access to free porn for minors. We dont tolerate it anywhere else in society... but people want to say it is ok on the adult web

If people are truly concerned about "losing something", then they should start doing something about it. You cant sit back passively and say "look what they are going to do to me"... then complain when it happens.

if you beleive that the government ultimately wants to read your brainwaves and record your thoughts, then you may want to consider living somewhere where that is not likely to happen.

Wig, I tend to agree with you on this one. That's why I always find myself voting Libertarian. You get the best of both worlds. Stay out of my fucking business!

The democrats bother me because they want to spend my money.

The republicans bother me because they always want in my business. Legislate morality and all that crap.

However JR, I am also more afraid of people who are afraid. So, what's the deal with all this fear of terrorism? I seem to remember some people on this board saying that we'd all be reading the Koran and wearing rags on our heads if Gore was president.

So, you have the Democrats using the fear of a police state for their political agenda. And you have the Republicans using the fear of the terrorists.

Seems like a wash...
