The "horny college student on spring break" is most likely NOT going to be purchasing online adult entertainment, he's going to be at in Florida/South Padre/the beach/just outside in general trying to get THE REAL THING. Then when he gets back, frustrated because he didn't get THE REAL THING, he'll buy online.

I seriously think this is a billing model to be considered. Recurring is where the money's at, everyone knows that. However, recurring can be chargeback hell. Let the buyer sample your site with a 24 hour pass. If they like the site, they'll buy another 24 hour pass. If they like it enough that they buy a third 24 hour pass, reward your loyal customer so they STAY with you. That's the model that Vegas was built on.

Somebody should build a paysite based on the ivy league college model. My alma mater (Bucknell U) raises tuition every year by thousands of dollars and no one bats an eye. (almost $35,000/year currently) Every year they get over 100,000 requests for applications, about 40,000 "lucky" students get applications after proving they are worthy. Of Those 40,000 applicants ($100 fee to apply) they accept about 4000-5000 and end up with 1800-1900 new freshmen. 85% of students, however, recur for 4 years. A site targetted at the surfer on the high-end of the economic spectrum could be made to work like this. Something like we have more than porn, we have stock quotes, financial chat, personalized videos, etc. Kind of like an on-line country club with a strip joint in it. Chargebacks would probably be near zero, members would stick around forever, and the clientle would be perfect for expensive upsells. Golf tournaments with the girls on the site being the cart girls, fishing trips with the babes, etc. Plus you could even take a cut if they book the travel package through you.
The more exclusive the club the more they want to get in and the more they are willing to pay for it. You're the folks that know paysites so feel free to tell me if you think the idea is stupid or not. I'm not sure if it's workable or not and this was just something that popped out of my head this afternoon after reading the board. I think finding a way to target upscale customers is the way to go because they are more recession resistant.

Per minute billing on a cc also is a high risk, high cb item to bill. While Visa on the one hand is now penalizing frivolous cb customers by labeling their cards in the system and declining them at the bank level for having cb's (or in some cases making the consumers go to the length of getting new cards etc when they claim they didn't charge it), this is offset by the fact that both MC and Visa recently changed their cb rules to make it harder yet again on merchants. And the cc companies are talking about instituting some actions that will keep tmf merchants from using third party billing as well...
And of course the charge 'em high, charge 'em often philosophy speaks for itself. Usually in the form of the merchants acct being tmf'd or maybe even the FTC or certain state prosecutors becoming involved.
In the end, this is not rocket science and there's nothing in the product that is neccessary for living. This is porn, and while it may have been nice to have charged a hundred bucks a month, it didn't happen that way and probably won't happen that way unless it's something in broadband.
I don't think it's entirely the fault of internet pornographers either -- after all, everyone from AOL to the NYTIMES bills at X dollars for all you can use per month, it's the subscription method ;)

I don't think it'll ever be possible to track a big spender in real time, not without reference data. And to get reference data, you need to track people and determine whether they are big spenders or not, and you need _a lot_ of that kind of data. Let's say you'll need to collect at _least_ 6 months to a year's worth of data.
I can't see anyone truly taking the time, effort, or $ involved to get a system like that going.
And what do we all end up with in the end? 500 sponsors using 500 different systems and methods to mine data. I call that a waste of effort :)
Then again, try to get more than 2 sponsors to agree on using the same system is not really something I see happening.
On that note, over the last 3 months I've been conducting a small experiment. I wrote a system that tracks users, and their perferences (lesbian/oral/anal/amateur, etc.). It works, but what good is that going to do me? Nothing, since I don't run sites. I code scripts. What good is it going to do someone else? Nothing, because it's my system and my data. The only way it'll ever work is if a few (read 10 to 20) of the bigger players start using the system to track users, and build up more data. Then you can go and mine.
But okay, I'm rambling. Monday sucks.

It is a balancing act - and has everything to do with WHERE other factors (chargebacks etc) start to play into the numbers...

In the end, the perfect solution is to offer multiple billing options. Offer multiple units of time, and if someone really likes the site, they'll be likely to sign over to the all you can eat plan, to save them a bit of money each month and rack up nice recurrings for you.
There's an idea... should unit-of-time billing be used as a pre-qualifier, then when you've seen someone purchase a certain amount of time repeatedly, THEN you sell them on a recurring one-price option?
Is THIS the model of the future? You read it here first.
Or maybe they'll do it once and "never again". And complain to FTC.

The Thermogard franchise in Baltimore dangled a huge carrot for me to come to work for them. I did, We sold windows at $1,000 per unit. How - perceived value, a much better "story" (packaging) about the window. Was the window 3 times as good, no, was the story 3 times better --- more so
Instituted follow up calls to customers who did not buy on our the first visit. Simple questions to narrow down the "real" reason they did not buy. Getting it down to a matter of price, then the question "If I could get you these windows for $700 a unit would you be ready to put them in your house today?" They commit, I have a "manager" go out "so there is not commission involved and we can save you $"
If they still did not buy on the second visit I sold the lead to a discount window company ;-)
How does this relate to our business? If you are going to go for the $99 (or whatever higher price point) price point provide perceived value then exhaust every opportunity to sell, if they do not buy finally pass them to a "discount" site

In the 80s, many companies bought only genuine IBM PCs at twice the price of clones. Eventually, they wised up.
You usually can't start charging a new, higher price for an existing service. But sometimes you can introduce a new price for an upgraded service, and make it stick. CDs had a higher price than vinyl LPs, and the price stuck.
So perhaps broadband porn will provide an opportunity to introduce a new pricing structure. We'll see.
The current political climate makes large price hikes ill-advised. Best to keep a low profile. Also, if current online leaders raised prices, the old guard Playboy etc. might take advantage to finally get their act together and grab market share.

Throb, in my past life, I working doing price for a variable priced, mostly leisure product (rental cars). I learned alot of lessons pricing out 60-100 million a year of business...
First off, cheap is NOT better. Consumers have a mental expectation list for pricing, created by the market itself. in porn, a $24.95 -$34.95 pricetag seems to be well within what the public is expecting. Once you drop either side of that price, something strange starts to happen. If you go too high, you are a rip-off. People KNOW you are charging too much, they have seen a bunch of $29.95 sites... so they KNOW your $49.99 price is a "rip" - unless you can sell past that will a truely unique product or service. Hertz, as an example, gets away with charging a little more for car rental because of their "#1" positioning.
Now, here is the funny part: Charge too little for your product, and people QUESTION the product. All of a sudden, you create a situation where people WONDER why your product is so much cheaper. This is why hotel chains like RedRoof and Super8 spend tons of money promoting the QUALITY of their product - because they are price pointing well below public expectations.
If 99% porn marketplace moved to $49.95 or $59.95, then the people charging $24.95 would have to change their sales pitch to match. Suddenly they move from selling porn memberships to trying to justify why they don't charge enough!

Re: collecting on chargebacks from the customer. We have and still do go after customers who chargeback. It gets turned over to our general counsel and we sue them for the original amount, fees and damages. A few hundred dollars. You'd be amazed at the amount of people who want to settle up on the original amount when they get served. We've only gone to court a few times but we've won each time. Most prefer to settle out of court or don't respond and get a judgment against them.

Let's face it....there is NO WAY a CC company or phone company can decide if you were or were not satisfied with the "product"! ;) all you need to do to contest a charge is say you weren't happy with the service.
I agree that high per minute charges are not the way to go long term. Even at $1.00 per hour or $20 for a 24hr pass still puts the amount of revenues per user well ahead of simple monthly billing.

Actually, the burden of proof rests on the merchant. CC companies could care less since they make bank either way.
CV2 field can lessen fraud but is not bulletproof. The best way to fight a chargeback is with paperwork. If you have CV2 info, documentation of ip used, site access logs and response from isp issued e-mail account it makes a pretty good paper trail. Still not a damning as that signature, but it's a wake up call to the CC company that there may be cardholder fraud involved.

I have had an issue with dialers in the US and canada that goes back like this: Paysites have set a percieved value in people's minds of about $30 a month for service. Typical dial goes through $30 in about 8-15 minutes, depending on the dialer.
Don't you think they public feels like they have been ripped off?
Phone system isn't like a credit card entered online - someone had to dial the phone... there is only one usual source for an outgoing call (the phone on the phone line). Credit card numbers can be stolen (look at the number of fake paysites collecting card information). You have no signature... who do you think the CC company is going to side with?

If you do not pay your local bill, your phone gets turned off and you get turned over to a collections agency. ----------------------------- Actually.... charges for 900 and other similar types of services can NOT be considered in the amount that the phone company uses to decide to 'interrupt' service for. They WILL include the number in the total amount, but if you look at the small print, it will be excluded in the 'You must pay' line. Phone companies because of regulatory agencies, can not suspend services for things they do not control. Therefore, they will willingly remove those charges and return them to the Biller for collection. Does not get you off the hook, just removes them from the bill...

Believe me, i looked into to this when we had really high chargebacks. it is pointless.
there is no way to determine whether or not the video really did freeze up at livefuck.com, or a guys password did not work... or if the guy just decided to get a free ride.
i have tried all this.... then there is the problem of stolen cards... you cannot conclusively determine that a card was not stolen and used by an unauthorized person.
i can say "it was not me" and you have to prove it was. That is also a real problem.
that is why i am saying that the pay by minute thing is really an accident waiting to happen and CAM is more correct in my opinion that a person needs to buy blocks of time... not just wake up one day to a $500 bill he does not even rememeber.

i can imagine that i would be extremely pissed to sign up to pay by the minute and then see that the server is painfully slow, or downloads are slow because of my connection or whatever.
unfortuneately, we live in a system where personal accountability is not its strong point. with credit cards, it is almost non-existant. (except in Japan)

but you can chargeback credit card charges with impunity and if you have a pay site or other paid service, you should understand that.

there is a HUGE difference between disputing a phone call and a credit card charge made online... a distinction which you are refusing to make.
burden of proof rests on the owner of the phone with a phone charges, whereas,... and his phone can be turned off, his credit fucked up and sent to collections for non-payment... where again, he will be in court trying to prove it was not him.
burden of proof rests on the bank/cc company with cc charges. You can call them and say anything you want and that is the end of it. the bank/cc company has to prove you are committing fraud.

Have you guys tryed join4free? Its a email program, that pays $1 /confirmed email. Subscribers loves it, since it gives a full membership, FREE that includes live video. So everybody signups.....
